This is a holy landmark for the jews, because it is where Rabbi Shimon bar Yochi lies. He was a Mishnaic-era Sage. This era was in 10-220 CE and was referred as the period of the Tannaim. This was the time after the religious center of Judaism, which was Jerusalem at the time, was switched to Yavne because the Second Temple was destroyed. The Jews operated under the operated under the occupation of the roman empire at the time of this era, the priests became increasingly corrupt as they've been seen as collaborating with the romans. Them being seen as corrupted and their mismanagement of the Ludaea Province eventually led to revolts, resent, and riots. This was a very conflicting time for the Jews and Rabbi Shimon bar Yochi was a rebel in these revolts against Rome and during this time authored the Zohar.

This holy site named the western wall is a wall built by Herod the Great to support the 1,555,000 square foot plaza where the temple stood. It is considered one of the holiest sites where Jewish people are allowed to pray because of it's relation to the Second Temple. Beng one of the walls of the Second Temple to stand after it was destroyed makes it holy because it is considered to be closest to the second temple making it the most sacred site recognized by the Jews outside of the former temple mount. The Western Wall is also known as the Wailing Wall aptly named because Jews weep at the site over it's destruction of the temples.

The Temple Mount is one of the most famous holy places not just for the Jews but for Muslims and Christians as well. It is the third holiest site in all of Judaism seeing as it has many other holy Jewish landmarks, and because the Jewish people regard it as a place where God's Presence is manifested more than any other place in the world. The site has been associated with Mount Moriah, a place where Abraham's Binding of Isaac happened in Jewish and Christian tradition. The Temple Mount is very religious because of its close association with the Second Temple and Solomon's Temple however we only have definite evidence on the Second Temple being at Temple Mount. Solomon's Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians and then the Second Temple was destroyed by the Romans. Both Temples were very important religious places for the Jewish people because they were central places of worship.

It was created in 691C.E. by the orders of Umayyad Caliphbd al-Malik during a time period called the second Fitna. It has had many changes to the outside since it was made, the most notable one was the addition of a gold plated roof in 1959-1961. It's structure was modeled after Byzantine churches and palaces. It has an octagonal plan for its shape and on top has a giant gold plated dome. You can see the Dome of the Rock as our background, it is considered one of Jerusalem's most recognizable sites.
