Rising Action: Landon decided to ask Jamie to the Homecoming dance as a last option. At this point Landon did not have feelings for Jamie.
As time progresses, Landon becomes more interested in Jamie. She asks him to take the lead role in the Christmas play that her dad directs. Landon agrees and soon enough Landon and Jamie are spending a significant amount of time together working on the play.
Jamie even gets Landon to visit the orphans with her around Christmas.
Jamie gives Landon her bible as a Christmas present.  This means a lot to both Jamie and Landon and shows a development in their relationship.
Climax:  Jamie tells Landon that he can't fall in love with her because she has Leukemia and is dying.
Falling Action: Jamie becomes weaker and weaker everyday. Landon tries to be as normal as possible around her and makes sure to spend a lot of time with her. Landon feels frustrated and conflicted as of why bad things happen to good people. 
Resolution: Landon asks Jamie's dad if he can marry her to giver her one last glimpse of happiness before she dies.  Jamie walks down the aisle although she can not support herself and is very weak.  Jamie and Landon get married right before she passes away. Landon is immature at the beginning of the novel. He hangs out with his rebellious friends and seems to not have a care in the world.  As the story advances and Landon meets Jamie he becomes increasingly more mature and self-aware.  He suddenly has a purpose in life and finds himself through God.
Jamie Sullivan is a senior at Beaufort High.  She is the daughter of Hegbert Sullivan, the town's Baptist minister.  She is very religious and shy.  She is dying of Leukemia.
Miss. Garber is the drama teacher at Beaufort High.  She is in her forties and is over 6 feet tall with red hair.  Both Landon and Jamie are in her class.
Hegbert Sullivan is a seventy-two-year old minister. He is the father of Jamie. His wife died during childbirth and he raised Jamie by himself. He is very serious, strict, and shows little emotion. He is unsure about Landon being with his daughter, and therefore is overprotective of Jamie.
Eric Hunter is Landon's best friend. He is also the captain of the football team. He often makes fun of Landon for being with Jamie, but in the end apologizes and accepts their relationship.
