In this session we look at why people are rich, and what those of us who weren’t born rich can do to catch up. Specifically, we can show how people make money from:

Investing in human capital (including IRR of going to USW -can be calculated from Power BI?)

Investing in other capital / Gearing (comparison of what firms can do and what people can do)

Founding a firm (we can set one up for each school; costs = £15).

Playing the ‘stock market’ (can be done live with crypto; costs = couple of $, but lecturer needs an account, which these days means KYC faff if you don't have one).

Creating intellectual property (can be interactive -I can do inventions, inc. how to do one + have a look at those of Elon Musk. Alternatively, others may prefer to get students to design Trade Marks/logos, possibly for firm created previously).

Govt subsidised investing and grants (Green tech. Patent Box; see above. Pensions; which might not be of much interest to youngsters, but is worth raising their awareness of).

 Influencing (I personally know nothing about this, but we have had students who do it that we could point to).
