José Joaquín Mora Porras was a key role model and leader during the 1856 Campaign against the filibusters led by William Walker. Born in 1818, he was the younger brother of Costa Rican President Juan Rafael Mora Porras. As a general, José Joaquín led Costa Rican forces with discipline and resolve during the Battle of Rivas. His leadership was crucial to organizing the army and securing victory. Sadly, he's less remembered than Juan Santamaría. Mora’s strategic mind played a vital role in defeating Walker and protecting Central American sovereignty.

Diary Entry: A Soldier in Rivas (April 11, 1856)

Dear Journal,
General José Joaquín Mora led us with strength and clarity today. He gave orders calmly, even while bullets flew past us and death is surround us. He reminded us why we were fighting not just for Costa Rica, but for all of Central America. We trusted him, I trust him. He stayed near the front, fearless, and always looking after the men in the battlefield. Under his command, we pushed forward. When the enemy started to fall back, I saw pride in the general’s eyes. Today, we stood firm. I felt proud to fight under and even if I die here, I would be at peace because I'm proud to be part of this movement.

Freedom Today

My Reflection

To me, freedom means the power to live with dignity, speak without fear, and protect those we love.
Today, I would stand up for justice, equality, and peace , the same values men like Juan Santamaría fought for over a century ago. Freedom is fragile. It’s not just a gift from the past , it’s a duty for the present.

To me, freedom means being able to speak, learn, and live in peace. I feel lucky to have choices and safety. If I had to stand up for something, it would be for kindness and respect for everyone. I think everyone deserves a chance to live free and be treated fairly.
