Gold- people traveled to gain wealth and riches, but in Ernest Shackleton's case his riches was knowledge of the area and its terrain
Glory- Ernest wanted to become a known explorer and build a legacy on his name and he did so by, being the first person to travel through the south pole.
Positive/Negative
This was positive because he discovered and mapped the land which was his first goal and he did build a legacy for his name. A potential negative of this would have been if the arctic was inhabited by people, but because of the extreme weather no people can live there so his exploration was very peaceful.

He did discovered different animals that inhabited the arctic, made maps of the terrain, and logged temperature changes, to educate others of his discovery.

Ernest did not encounter any people or different cultures in his explorations because of the extreme weather. He did gain a lot of knowledge about the terrain and animals that lived there to spread that knowledge to other people he made maps of the south pole to educate people of what that land was like. He brought back knowledge of animals such as arctic foxes, arctic hares, and snow bunting which was amazing because some of those animals nobody knew of at the time. He also recorded data about temperature and how it changes in the day and night and the temperature of arctic water. He a figured out what people would have to wear and use in order to survive in the arctic, and he didn't take much from the arctic because all there is there is snow and ice and miles and miles of it but he did take back all of the information to educate the generations to come.

On negative effect of colonization is when they were exploring and to get the land they were colonising they forced the native people out of their home and/or killed them like explorers such as christopher columbus. Another negative effect colonization had was when they started building homes and starting crops they started having more and more slave labor on their plantations to keep up with the crops so they would make slaves pick cotton and tend to other crops. A positive effect colonization had was the rise of population in the areas being colonized because people were becoming comfortable and had crops and homes and everything they needed to grow
