Not Donating to Charity even when I Can: Often times when I can donate to charity I actively choose not to. This is usually because I feel that there are more people who will do it so that I will be covered. I also cannot actively see the suffering of others, so do not feel as bad as I would have otherwise. This is an example of indifference because I do not care enough to donate even when I know that times may be difficult for others and my donation could help. I can definitely improve on this by taking others into a more active account and being more generous and empethetic towards others in need.

Taking Bad News Easily: When I hear bad news about other countries I tend to feel that it doesn't affect me, and therefore, I should not be worried about it. I brush it off and continue on without giving it much more thought. I am being very unfair and extremely indifferent about my thinking in this instance because although it does not directly affect me, there are people all around the world who are directly suffering from the bad news that I may be hearing. A way that I can improve on this is taking more time to hear about what it actually going on, and taking the time to reflect and show my respect to those that may be suffering.

Drug Usage: In Barrie there is a high rate of drug consumption, especially in Downtown Barrie. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has stated that deaths that occur from opioid poisoning have remained double what they were before covid (Bogdan). Not only that, but opioid deaths in Barrie are twice the provincial average; which officials say can be lessened with the introduction of a safe consumption site (Bogdan). This is a good diea but the city of Barrie has not made any progress towards it, and continue to make excuses about the delays that this project has been placed under (Bogdan). The injustice that this causes is significant, and could be solved with the proper materials and care from governments. Unfortunately, due to the cost and time Barrie officials have delayed this project for many years. The way that this issue can be further resolved past building the safe consumption site, includes having systems in place for these individuals so they may get help and feel compassion from authority that goes against the indifference exhibited currently (Bogdan).

Homelessness: Homelessness has been an issue in many places around Canada. However, there is also a significant amount in the Barrie area alone (Bruton). There was a bylaw that was passed in the summer of 2023, “This new bylaw, as we understand it, will make it illegal for people, including charitable organizations, to provide food, clothing or sleeping gear out on city property to people who are experiencing homelessness” she said. “This has significant implications for organizations funded to do this work, for mutual aid groups and even for individuals," (Bruton). In this situation Barrie is not only being indifferent to the suffering of the homeless population, but in this indifference actively making their lives more difficult than they already are by taking away most of their support. As a solution or step up from this indifference, I believe it is important that governments come together with city representatives in order to make a plan that makes it easier for the homeless, and to make sure that they actually do put care into citizens that need help.

Human Trafficking: In Canada and simply put, the entire world; human trafficking is a major issue. 50,000,000 people on a given day are trapped in trafficked situations (Hardy). This number is ridiculously high, but it unfortunately makes sense. Many governments around the world put a blind eye to human trafficking because it not only is a major issue, but it is difficult to deal with and put a stop to. Governments do have some protocols and laws in place, but many times they are broken without consequences because the criminals are often hard to trace after they leave the country (Hardy). There are some organizations and charities that help to support victims and/or their families, but the governments indifference to what has now become almost a common occurence is very disheartening. These families often will not be able to see their loved one again, because as soon as they leave the country they found their victim in, the government says that there is nothing they can do as it is out of their jurisdiction (Hardy). I think that if the person is a citizen of that country and have been living there for at least multiple years, the government should have more that they can do for the victim and their family.

Gender Inequality: In many places all around the world there are still women and girls who struggle with gender equality. Some countries are even going backwards in ther equality by stripping women and girls of their rights. For example, in Afghanistan the Taliban have banned women from going to secondary school, and gaining any further education (Lowery). Another example is how South Sudan has some of the highest maternal mortality rates, AND forced marriages (Lowery). It is not only that the countries are indifferent to the struggles these women and girls face due to their oppression, but they actively make it more challenging for them to survive and have a good standard of living. The men who run these countries turn a blind eye to the womens suffering because in order to address it they would need to help them, making them no longer inferior to the men who help (Lowery). It is disgusting that things like this are allowed and that a global organization has not taken the stand to protect these women who desperately need it. The indifference and injustice in these cases are truly heartbreaking and cause one to reflect on how fortunate we are in Canada.
