This day is significant because it is a holiday that Mexicans remember and honor their dead loved ones. It's not a gloomy or sad occasion, as it is a festive and colorful holiday, celebrating the lives of those who have passed on. Mexicans visit cemeteries, decorate the graves and spend time there, with friends and family members of the people that have died. They may also make decorated alters in their homes to welcome the spirits. The spirits are greeted with special food and fruit and things like flowers and candles are laid on the altar, in the family home. These are things that those people enjoyed when they were alive. When the spirit departs, the living consume the food and share it with their family and friends and neighbours.
