The dilemma of difference and solidarity: Feminist scholarship emphasises attention to internal differences among women—such as race, class, and sexual orientation—to avoid treating “women” as a monolithic category. Yet in political practice, it is sometimes necessary to organise solidarity and secure rights around the category of “women”. Methodologically, how might we balance sensitivity to difference with analysis of commonality without becoming trapped in a theoretical impasse that precludes any form of generalisation?
