Use tools that are available to you, there is an article in the caption of the video with lots of productivity tips, Hank talks about an app that he uses to keep track of his schedule, and something that really stuck with me and helped me in this video was to think of work as a hobby or try to make it into something that you enjoy. Work doesn't have to be strenuous and draining, it can also be fun.

When feeling upset, grouchy, crabby, or simply aren't having the best day, focusing on at least 3 things you are grateful for can bring you into the present moment and snap you out of the mood you're in. For example, I am grateful for my family, my girlfriend, and the beautiful weather today. I use this trick and my mom has also used it to take my stubborn self out of a bad mood. Kristen told the class this tip and I thought it was important to write down.

Give Value to Information

While learning, you may think, "I don't know why I need to learn this stuff, I'm never going to use it in real life". This is normal, it simply means that you may see the information as unimportant; however, telling yourself that information is unimportant signals to your brain that their is no use processing and storing what you are learning in long term memory. This makes you forget information easily and it makes recalling specific information about "unimportant" topic difficult. Instead of being so stubborn about what you learn, provide personal value in some way to the information. Doing this signals to your brain that the information is relevant, which will help you to encode the info a lot easier; i.e. semantic encoding.

Metacognition means thinking about thinking. Metacognition is so useful and can be applied to nearly any aspect of life, and you may be accidentally metacognitive every day! Being metacognitive about your learning is a great way to reflect on how you can improve your learning process and be more effective. Simply think back on your thoughts, actions, habits and slowly work to adjust them to how you see fit. Metacognition has helped me so much throughout this semester and has really assisted me in breaking down some of my bad habits that I carried from High school to College.

Cognitive Load is the amount of information that your brain can process at any given time. When cognitive load is maxed out, information becomes a lot more difficult to process and store. There are 3 aspects of cognitive load: intrinsic load, germane load, and extraneous load. Intrinsic load is the natural difficulty of any given task. Extraneous load is outside distractions that prevent you from accomplishing a task. Germane load is the amount of energy it takes to process and figure out how to complete a task.

To lower cognitive load, take breaks, limit distractions, and work in a place that you are comfortable and able to focus.

Sleep resets your cognitive load, which helps the brain process and store information that you learned the day before, while also preparing your brain for more information for the next day. Studies have also shown that decreased sleep and increased aging are interrelated, as well as decreased sleep leading to decreased cognitive funciton, and decreased sleep leading to a higher chance of alzheimers. Sleep can even have physical effects on your body, a study was created in which one group of people had 8+ hours of sleep a night for a week while another group was limited to 6 hours a night. In the results of the study, the group that slept less had the genes that were switched off, these genes related to their immune system. Also, genes associated with tumors, streses, and cardiovascular disease were working even harder than before the expirement. So, sleep. you need it!

Avoid fatty foods before bed, diet plays a large role in the quality of sleep you get.

Aim for a room temperature of 65*F, the colder temperature will allow your brain to fall asleep easier.

Regularity = KEY. Sleeping at the same time every night as well as having a nightly routine gets your brain and body ready to go to sleep every night. This helps you fall asleep easier and gets you a better sleep.

Put the phone down. Turn your phone off for 1 hour before you go to bed. Your phone wakes your brain up so much, it is designed to keep you entertained and engaged for as long as possible. Scrolling on your phone activates and uses a vast majority of your brain, keeping it awake when you may need to go to sleep.

R.E.M. stands for Rapid Eye Movement. This stage of sleep is when you have your eyes moving behind your eyelids, your body may jolt or twitch, vivid dreams occur, and you are easily woken up. Non-R.E.M. sleep, or non-rapid eye movement sleep, is when you are in a deep sleep. You are not easily woken up, your heart rate slows down, and this is when you get the best quality of sleep. You should aim for roughly 7-9 hours of sleep a night so your brain and body can be in the best state for the next day.

Organization is so useful in college. I have found that being able to be at least a little prepared for class is the most beneficial thing for me. In the time have before class I check Canvas to see if the teacher has posted anything about what we are doing, then I check the assignments to make sure I finished everything, finally, I read over my notes and annotations from the previous class to refresh myself on what we learned.

I have also found that using to-do lists is very helpful and can be a great assistance in keeping track of any daily tasks.

When the class watched the Big Rocks video in the first few weeks, it stuck with me. I thought it was very funny at first and then I started to implement it into how I prioritize my assignments and realized how useful it really is. Now, I use it in school and even my daily life.
