1984 is a must read if you like dystopian novels. This book is about Winston Smith who is not satisfied with a totalitarian government. The government is ALWAYS watching. They have telescreens everywhere that can listen and see the citizens even in their own homes! Throughout the book he rebels in different ways. His job is a record keeper, aka, changing the past to match "The Party's" ideal past and whatever they want to change it to that's what he does. Along the way he gets into an intimate relationship with a girl that is also not a fan of the government. Read the book to find out what happens to Winston and the crazy world he is in!

1. If lies are repeated enough they become true. When something is ingrained and repeated multiple times, it is hard not to believe it.

- The party is always telling the people lies so people start to believe them and forget what the correct answer is. Such as 2+2=5. Whatever the government says goes no matter how wrong it is.

- When O'Brien is torturing Winston he holds up 4 fingers and Winston says there is 5 but O'Brien repeats that he is holding up 4 that Winston starts to believe it.
2. Things aren’t always as they seem. Government alters the way things are perceived and seen by the public eye.

- The people think a war is going on, but only the proles get bombed. The government wants the people to think this so they will continue to trust and rely on the government.

- Big Brother makes Oceania seem so powerful and mighty, but really it’s a corrupt government and the people are living in terrible conditions. The government doesn’t care about the citizens.
3. People do corrupt things to gain and maintain power. People will push the limits, trick, and lie to maintain power.

- O'Brien tricks Winston into thinking he is against the party and part of the brotherhood to keep power over Winston and prevent him from revolting.

- Charrington is part of the thought police and tells Winston that he has a room without a telescreen but there is a telescreen and He is able to keep eyes and make sure Winston’s ideas were not spreading because he would not want people to be talking out against the government.

This massacre that happened was because of Chinese citizens protesting for a pro-democratic government. Chinese officials came in and killed and arrested many of the protesters. This is similar to the themes in 1984 because it shows how controlling governments can be and how they will not listen to the people. China is a very controlling government. They become very violent when someone tries to up rise. Just like in 1984 when Winston rebels against the government.

This book is about a society with a corrupt government. People have to wear gas masks when they go outside because the air pollution is so bad. Their water isn't drinkable and disease is everywhere. This book is similar to the themes in 1984 because they both are criticizing a world that has gone wrong and where our world could go if we are not careful. They both have controlling corrupt governments. They also both have characters trying to find, and fix these issues in the societies.

What i've liked about this book is how this government is showed. I think Orwell does a great job of describing it and really shows how corrupt it is. I also like how he has characters turn on Winston because it keeps you on your toes and trying to guess if the next person will relaly be on his side. I did not like how slow the beginning started. I also think in the beginning he did not include enough issues for Winston so it was hard to focus and understand the book. When it got to the good parts of the book i feel like a read a lot quicker because i wanted to know what would happen next. I also did not really like the main character Winston. He just seemed kind of wimpy and scrawny and nervous to go for things, although he was doing more than anyone in the society was doing. I also liked how Orwell separated the inner and outer party. Where the inner party gets everything and the outer gets rations. That also helped to show the unfairness of the government.

I think there a reasons to read this book and reasons to not. If you like dystopian novels this a must read, but even if you don't you can learn many things. I think people should read this to see how lucky we are to be living in the US with a democratic government and living with a free market economy and free society. I also think people should read it because its a classic and has been out for a long time and is still relevant today with it's themes and ideas.

What you can Learn!

I think this book is very important to read because you learn what a totalitarian government is and why it doesn't work. We see how controlling, corrupt and dangerous having this kind of government can be. It serves as a warning sign that we must stay away from this or there could be great consequences including the government controlling every aspect of a citizens life. Especially in this day in age with all the technology, we have to be careful what we are doing online. I would hate to have a telescreen in my house watching at all times with no privacy, sometimes though even if its on a smaller scale an Alexa or Siri could be considered a telescreen to a degree. I think Orwell's purpose was to warn us against the dangerous there could be in the world if we let the government become too involved. I think we can learn from the characters that we don't want to be like them. We don't want to be arguing against the government that 2+2 does not equal 5.
