My Music Identity

I would describe my musical identity as LOUD! imagine you are on a train and no one else is in attendence. Your playing your very favorite song, the one where you cant help but to move and groove. This song isnt the kind you play after a long day at the office to relax but the kind of song that gets your blood flowing. My music identity is unappologetic, it bears no filter and allows me to say, do and feel exactly the way I want without any reluctantancy based on fear of judgement. My music identity has a soft side. It allows me to cry whenever the world has become overwhelming. It helps me stay in bed to sheild myself from what is yet to come but also pumps me with motivation to get out of bed and face it. Being an African American I find that there are many sterotypes about music. I love all types of music except for heavy metal and rock. That type of music gives me anxiety for some odd reason. Hip hop helps me to be fearless, lets me be whoever I want to be at the time of listening. Country helps me with expressing my feelings, and R&B and slow jams stimulate intamacy for me. My Music identity relates to my sense of self because I am ALL of those things. I am loud, fearless, unapologetically proud of who I am, and emotional. My music identity is me.

Presentational Music / Participatory Music

If I had to compare me varies musical experiences Id start with my participatory music. I don't have any clips of my work but I will provide clips that I feel represent me. My participatory musical experiences go as far as karaoke at a local bar. This is my favorite because after a couple of drinks you don't have to worry about judgement or giving a good performance you are free to be yourself and let loose. "In participatory tradition a priority is placed on encouraging more people to join.." (Turino) The cons of this music experience are that you aren’t putting soul into your performance its more for fun. My presentational musical experience goes about as far as my 5th grade role in the play (The wizard of Oz). I was terrified! I knew I’d be judged if I didn’t hit the right notes, or get the lyrics just right! In my opinion music should be free. It is a form of art and much like the book says it is an activity something that you do! Beyoncé is in my opinion being one of the best presentational artists. She makes sure her performances are perfect from the lighting to the sound check.

Remixed Culture Module 9

What are your thoughts on remixed culture? Personally I love the thought of taking a song that is very popular and remixing it into what could be better than the original songs. Some songs I must admit are horrible remakes and I often think to myself why would they remix this classic? or I think they should have just the song be because the remix inst even close to the original song. However, for the songs that are remixed well and thought out with technique and style I enjoy. some artists believe that taking a song that is already very popular and throwing Dj mixing and snippets of their song in it will not change how the listeners feel because we love the original song but that is not true. Remixing a song well can make the listener prefer the remixed song better than the original. My three favorite remixes of all time are Always be my baby by Mariah carey I love this song, and I love the way she sang it. I also enjoy rap mixed in with r&b and this is exactly what has happened her the artists took something very classic and turned it to something hip and fun. (Please click the link to hear the song i know you will love it!)
<figure class="attachment attachment--preview" data-trix-attachment="{"contentType":"image","height":310,"url":"https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/9VcRh7VzkUnDBr2hIsmJqSXtA5yZWPDzaEsxHxeb2MbD011DBjxJm4ICJ4iSkcl3ZLQ=h310","width":310}" data-trix-content-type="image" data-trix-attributes="{"caption":"Djs are known for mixing musical stylings into their own. Some of the worlds most known and famous djs have created masterpeices by taking form yhe orginal.

Secondly I love Biggie ( known as the notorious B.I.G ) and Mase, as we all know Biggie died before his time but he didnt leave this world without blessing us with his musical styling. He was known as one of the best and His remix to this song with Mase proves it. "Only You" is definitely my second favorite remix.
Thirdly a remix that i fell in love with was Kissing you by P.diddy. First let me say this song is a classic and puts me in such a lovely mood. The song is filled with romance and tells a story of love. This remix doesn't take away from this fact and that is what I love about it.
What effect do you think this majority of power has on culture in North America or the World? I think the majority of power that the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) effects the music industry in north america in a very positive way despite what some may think they are enforcing rules that i believe help everyone have a fair chance at producing music and not having any one steal from them and take music that didn't belong to them and make it their own. Everything in this world needs rules and protocols to abide by that way there is not chaos.

Module 11 Music and Gender

As you may have figured out I love rap (hip hop) and R&B! In this culture of music gender plays a major part in the way we look at music. In this hi hop industry there are unspoken rules (gender roles) within the artists. This is a very masculine genre of music and women are not only not taken seriously and disrespected on a regular basis but they are also not looked at as competition. Females in the industry feel as if they have to speak sexually and over sexualize themselves in order to be taken serious as an artists and males not only disrespect women by calling their female counter-parts B***** and sluts. Men and women are also not allowed to change gender roles. For example the rapper Young Ma is mot known for the lyric in the song "OOOUUU" where she said something along the lines of a woman preforming an sexual act on her as if she was a male. Critics of the song not only made fun of her but also ridiculed the fact that a gay woman tried to make a song as if she was a man. Another example would be Frank Ocean's "Thinking about you". The song widely popular until the artist came out and said he was gay and the song was about a man. Men were outraged by this fact and the artist hasn't made a hit song since then.
Men are indeed more powerful in this industry but women are trying to make a name for them selves unfortunate the women in this business who do not want to be seen as a sex symbol aren't as popular or paid as much as the women who dont mind that type of sexualization. In the contemporary world men were castrated so that they could sing in a high pitch. To me this i an example of how some industries (music companies nowadays or theaters back then) would rather have men go through a vast amount of unnecessary behavior rather than letting women who are quite capable do the part.(Young ma video) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVf_4Ns3qLU

Young Ma

Frank Ocean

(YOUNG MA)
(FRANK OCEAN)
