You shouldn't ever want something so bad. Kino was very obsessed with the pearl that he didn't realize what he had. Which was a baby, a home and a wife. He focused mainly on what he wanted instead of working up to get that later in life. They are in a very small and poor environment, meaning they can't really get all that stuff just yet. Kino should have been patient and dealt with the stuff he already had instead.

Kino
Quote : " Now Kino was reluctant to open it. What he had seen, he knew, might be a reflection, a piece of flat shell accidently drifted in or a complete illusion. In this Gulf of uncertain light there were more illusions than realities. " This means that before, he was afraid and hesitant to open and was more cautious before finding the pearl. After, he became obsessed and only cared about the pearl more than anything else.

Juana
Quote : Kino had wondered often at the iron in his patient, fragile wife. She, who was obedient and respectful and cheerful and patient, she could arch her back in child pain with hardly a cry. She could stand fatigue and hunger almost better than Kino himself. In the canoe she was like a strong man. " This means that she is a very strong and good wife. She stays this way through the whole story, trying to tell Kino who was too obsessed with the pearl that it was evil.

This lesson is accurate to people now because when people want something badly, they'll literally do anything to get it. Which is dangerous and can lead to harm to yourself and to others.

1. Personification. " A town is like a colonial animal. A town has its own has a nervous system and a head and shoulders and feet. A town is a thing separate from all other towns, so that there are no two towns alike. And a town has a whole emotion. "
2. Metaphor. He was trapped as his people were always trapped, and would be until, as he had said, they could be sure that the things in the books were really in the books.
3. Simile. " The news stirred up something infinitely black and evil in the town; the black distillate was like the scorpion, or like hunger in the smell of food, or like loneliness when love is withheld. "
4. Hyperbole. " "It is as I thought," he said. "The poison has gone inward and it will strike soon. Come look!" He held the eyelid down. "See- it is blue." And Kino, looking anxiously, saw that indeed it was a little blue. And he didn't know whether or not it was always a little blue. But the trap was set. He couldn't take the chance. "
5. Onomatopoeia. "Her back was bent with pain and her head was low. "

1. Situational Irony
" Beware of that kind of tree there, " he said, pointing. " Do not touch it, for if you do and then touch your eyes, it will blind you. And beware of the tree that bleeds. See, that one over there. For if you break it the red blood will flow from it. And it is evil luck. " This is Situational because Kino is telling Juana something she already knows, but when Juana tells him something he doesn't pay attention or care to know.
2. Dramatic Irony
In Chapter 2, we know that Coyotito is being poisoned by the doctor, but Kino doesn't know that he's poisoning him and that Coyotito was fine before.
