Greedy

"Mama: “Son, how come you talk so much ‘bout money?” Walter: “Because, it is life, Mama!” Mama: “Oh—so now its life. Money is life. Once upon a time freedom use to be life—now its money. I guess the world really do change…” Walter: “No—it was always money, Mama. We just didn’t know about it.” (p. 74)

This quote shows how greedy Walter really is, he says that all the matters is money. When Walter says "No--it was always money" this shows that the only thing fueling him is his greed. In Walter's eyes without money there is no reason to live, if there is no money then you can't do anything in life. Even Mama talks about how the only thing he thinks about is money, and how back in her day the only thing she wanted was freedom. They only wanted freedom because it's what they needed, but Walter doesn't need extra money.

“And you—ain’t you bitter, man? Ain’t you just about had it yet? Don’t you see no stars gleaming that you can’t reach out and grab? … Here I am a giant—surrounded by ants. Ants who can’t even understand what it is the giant is talking about” (p.85)

This quote is Walter at his lowest. It shows us that Walter is jealous at how rich George is, and how he was born into a wealthy family. Walter also feels that no one in his family understands his goals. Everyone in his family are fine with what they have, not trying to go for anything bigger than they need to. Walter is always wanting more and more.

I think Walter is a decent person, he just worries to much about money. If he would think about his family as much as he thinks about money, he would of been a lot happier. The only reason I think he is decent is because his alternative motive is to help his family with there money problems. So I can kinda of lean towards saying he isn't all bad. He's still a grown baby who gives up when nothing goes his way.

The image is depicts a man filled with so much greed, that he is eating money. I'm assuming he's eating the money so that no one else can have it. Also the man on the right who is far smaller can represent Walter's family. Walter's family isn't getting any attention from Walter. A good example is when Walter uses all the money to get a liquor licence. Then he loses all the money when he should had given some to Beneatha.

The man whose riches satisfy his greed
Is not more rich for all those heaps and hoards
Than some poor man who has enough to feed
And clothe his corpse with such as God affords."

This poem talks about a man and his greed. This relates to Walter because he wants more and more money. The line "The man whose riches satisfy his greed" directly relates to Walter where the only thing he wants is money. He has a job that pays but he wants more. Walter will do anything to get his money even risk his sister's future.

The line "He never stops to think about the outcome" relates to Walter because he uses all the money and ends up losing it all. When he should had used some for Beneatha to go to medical school. He didn't think of the possibility of someone running away with the money. The line "He's got you hypnotized, must be mesmerized" also relates to him because Mama put her trust on him, and he ended up completely taking advantage of that. The line "He's cut you down to size, hey yeah" relates because Walter is always talking about how money is the most valuable thing in the world. The way he says it makes it look like money is more important then his own family.

Theme: Class/Money

“What’s the matter with you all! I didn’t make this world! It was give to me this way! Hell, yes, I want pearls ‘round my wife’s neck. Ain’t she supposed to wear no pearls? Somebody tell me—tell me, who decides which women is suppose to wear pearls in this world. I tell you I am a man—and I think my wife should wear some pearls in this world!” p. 143

This quote supports the theme because it explains how people feel in lower class. Walter talks about how he doesn't think it's fair he was born into a poor family. He wishes that he was born into a family that had money, so he could buy things for his wife. He thinks that all men should have equal opportunity to be rich, but that isn't the case. People born with money have lots more benefits compared to people born without money.
