The Battles of Lexington and Concord are known and marked as the first battle of the American Revolution. This also marks the start of the fight for Independence for American colonies. The famous quote, "The shot heard round the world," came from this specific battle. In the early hours of the morning, 3-night riders Paul Revere and 2 other riders warned and woke up the Militia and Minutemen to warn that the British were coming. The battle went on for hours but the Americans held on and eventually, they won over the British telling the world they were able to hold their own against the strongest army in the world at that time.

The Battle of Bunker Hill took place almost a month after the Battle of Lexington and Concord. The British wanted this hill so they were able to set up a base and control more of the area. As British soldiers got to Bunker Hill, hundreds of minutemen were already at the top of the hill, ready to create havoc. British soldiers fought hard but the waves and waves of muskets that were being fired at them were too much, and most were killed or injured. The battle lasted for hours, but soon the militias and minutemen actually ran out of ammunition, so they were forced to retreat. Even though it was a British win, the British lost more men.

The Second Continental Congress was summoned after British soldiers were storming Boston once again. The meeting was summoned to debate on what to do and how would they meet and fight against the massive British Army. It took some debate but it was agreed by congress that they would create their own army called, "The Continental Army." They also chose George Washington to be the Commander in Chief of the army.

An author named Thomas Paine wrote a 47-page pamphlet called, "Common Sense." This pamphlet was written with political arguments to show and encourage everyone in the colonies that the 13 colonies should be fighting against the British and to have their own independence. This pamphlet is one of the main reasons why most colonies started to support congress and the continental army. This pamphlet is still printed today and it was known as the best American title as of 2006.

On October 26th, 1776, Benjamin Franklin went to France for an important mission. To convince the French king, King Louis XVI, to side with the colonies to defeat Britain since for one, France and Britain were big rivals. Benjamin arrived in late 1776 and that's where it all began. It took a bit of trial and error, but both sides agreed on negotiations, and on February 6th, 1778, both sides signed a treaty for France to directly participate in the war. The French even invited the Spanish to join the war and both signed their own treaty on April 12th, 1779.

On September 1775, the Second Continental Congress gave permission for two expedition groups of troops to move up towards Quebec, Canada. General Richard Montgomery and his forces of troops were able to move up to Lake Champlain and were able to successfully capture Montreal, Canada on November 13th that same year, and advance towards Quebec City. Meanwhile, Colonel Benedict Arnold led his men to the city. In mid-November, Arnold arrived outside of Quebec City. He requested the city to surrender but was denied. He was then forced to wait for Montgomery and his forces to join and aid them. The two forces met in early December. They demanded General Guy Carleton to surrender again but denied it. On December 31st, 1775, in the early hours, both American forces charged into the city. The British defenders were well prepared. It was a hard battle, but the American forces were forced to retreat and are known as the first major loss for the American colonies during the American Revolution.

On December 25th, 1776, George Washington came up with a plan to lead his men and army into the cold and frozen Delaware River, and lead them on a march into Trenton, New Jersey. They would surprise attack a Garrison of 1,500 Hessians and improve the army's fortune in winning more battles. It was very risky but on December 26th, 1776, Washington did exactly what he planned out. The Garrison was caught by surprise and Washington trampled them and took a major victory, taking major supplies like food, and clothing. This battle is considered the turning point of the American Revolution and led the Americans to more victories.

On September 5th, 1781, Both the British and American Army were exhausted of the now 6-year war and both sides wanted to end it quickly. Washington made his first move and tracked down General Charles Cornwallis and his Royal Navy at the Chesapeake Bay. The Continental Army made their move and the Royal Navy was forced to abandon General Cornwallis at Yorktown in a defeat. This was when the British were forced to lay siege at Yorktown on September 28th, 1781. Both the French and Spanish soon joined the Americans and started attacking the British. It took 3 long weeks but on October 19th, 1781, the British finally surrendered.

On September 3rd, 1783, American and British representatives met up in the Hotel d'York in Paris, France to sign a peace treaty called, The Treaty of Paris. This peace treaty had two very important points. One, the British were to recognize the 13 colonies' independence of being a country and to be free from the British Empire and the rules of King George. Another important point was that the Americans were allowed to expand territory west of North America. This treaty formally ended the American Revolution for good.
