Survivors of this trauma may speak of physical pain, such as a 'pain in my heart' or a 'lump in my throat.' Homicide survivors may experience 'grief spasms' many years after the murder. Their brain function may also be deeply impacted by spasms involving intense feelings of loss, even years after the loss of a loved one.

Lower social and economic communities suffer the threat of constant violence. Students living in these areas will see firsthand and feel hopeless. This will significantly affect their ability to concentrate at school and perform to their maximum potential. I myself grew up watching street fights, stabbings, and shootings in my community. We lived like prisoners in our own homes, and rarely were we allowed to play outside. School was a release from fear and a safe place, but the threat of violence was always on our minds. Class/homework was never a priority growing up in elementary school.
