It changes our cell formation so that the skin is able to grow fur and multiply the cells we use for sight and smell. It's a complicated yet fascinating process. Our inner ear changes, the ear drum altered so that we perceive sounds faster, the lenses in our eyes change form and size in order for us to see at night and more science stuff. Due to a genetic mutation, the hormones that trigger the transformation are a defect in the Fengári. There's a little error in their genes. Instead of getting released at will, the hormone level is unstable. Their bodies instead store the hormone and release it in huge amounts. And that happens once a month. And because the hormone gets released at such high levels it numbs their minds and they usually have no control in their beast form.

Older than the bible, older than religion itself. Now how far back it goes is not exactly known but it's said that when the first humans settled in Europe Lycans were already there. And this was around 40,000 years ago. Moving on, "Lycan" is a name given to us by humans. It's Greek for "Man-Wolf". Much like "Werewolf" is old English for Wolf-Man. We got the name because we look similar to wolves in our beast forms. Though, we aren't related to them. Lycans are their own creatures. Not human, and not wolf. I'm human as in lycan legends. There are many theories as to how Lycans evolved, where they came from, and what exactly they are. Ancient lycan language (which is almost extinct) is a mix of Greek, Russian, and old English, which really doesn't look English or sound English at all. We are lycan in this language, but we have another name. We call our species Thirío Arashim which roughly translates to beast shifter. In medieval times, when legends of wolfmen started to make their rounds, we were still in huge numbers around the world. From Europe to North Asia, to the Arctic, and to the USA. Around 1200 humans were getting more and more. In some countries they were aware of us and hunted us down. We were winning at first. But due to a few incidents, the tables have turned dramatically around 1500. Many don't even know what they are. Others stay human the majority of their lives, trying to fit in, living amongst them, even in big cities. There are stories of a chemical that the government put into the water, or the air, with the help of chemtrails nowadays, that suppresses our transformation process. So there are even Lycans that never shifted and probably never will. They might feel weird, feel a longing, out of place, or feel a tingling in their hands or teeth. But they will believe it is only their imagination. Traditionally, Lycans lived in clans or packs, if you want to call it that. And other Lycans such as myself call the weres Fengári. Which means Moon Shifter.

In this case, seven years. However, that is only unless they refrained themselves from eating human flesh. If they dined on people, they were doomed to be wolves forever. One interesting Ossorian tale is related to us by Giraldus Cambrensis' Topigraphica Hibernica. In this tale a traveling priest is confronted by a wolf, who reveals himself to be a werewolf. He asks the priest to preform the last sacrament on his wife, who is dying. The problem is that his wife is also a werewolf, and the priest is concerned about performing the final rights for an animal. The husband wolf peels away his wife's wolf-pelt revealing a women underneath. This convinces the priest, and after receiving the final sacrament, the She-Wolf expires peacefully, as the husband went on to finish his years in wolf form. This of course, caused a certain amount of debate and conflict amongst those who heard it. Contradictorily, a few hundred years ago, Fynes Moryson reported that the Irish into wolves yearly, and according to Mr. Ashleys book on the subject, those in Ossory considered themselves to be descended from wolves. Now you might be thinking that sounds like their might have been practice of lycanthropy before the Christians arrived, and the folklore of the area was appropriated and modified in order to suit the new establishment. This is possible especially since according to the Leabhar Na H-Uidhi the druids that lived there practiced shapeshifting traditions. This supported by another tale: It is said that in Ireland, Lycanthropy was hereditary, and that those of certain lineages could shift into Faelad, that is wolf-shapes. The most famous of these lycanthropes were of the Laignech Faelad, otherwise known as "The Wolf Men of Tipperary". These were fearsome warriors who, like howling wolves, fought for the Ancient Kings of Ireland, and were every bit as fierce and ferocious as the beasts they assumed the shape of.

Unlike it's continental cousins, this shapeshifter is the guardian and protector of children, wounded men, and lost persons. According to some ancient sources, the Irish werewolves were recruited by kings in time of war. While they're no longer there, Ireland was once the strong hold of wolves. In fact, it was sometimes referred to as "Wolfland". However, though they were wiped out in 1786, not all tales involving Irish wolves were terrifying. In fact, Saint Albeus was, according to legend, suckled by a She-Wolf after being abandoned. (Speaking of saints, one of the places where the cynopheliac St. Christopher was best known of was in, Ireland.) Though, as is to be expected with any country with an abundant predator, stories were told of them. In this case, werewolf stories. Saint Patrick, according to some sources, had the ability to turn people into wolves. The most told story about this is how he turned king Vereticus into a wolf. However, in some accounts he is also credited for cursing the people of Ossory with a form of lycanthropy that lasted many years. From what I can tell, the earliest account which does this is the Kongs Skuggio. However, more commonly this transformative curse is attributed to Saint Natalis. Regardless of Saint, the story goes that one of these holy men approached a group of people as they were holding an assembly and began to preach. Now, to be honest it seems a tad rude to barge in on other people's business, however they took his counsel anyway, but responded to him by howling like wolves. In his anger, he asked God to punish them, and they became werewolves.

In times past, it was especially difficult for a werewolf to manage to maintain a normal life, and this problem continues onto today, meaning that many lycanthropes end up homeless. 
As a result, they mix and mingle with hobos, bums, and tramps, borrowing hobosigns and adding their own symbols to create a means of communication that could be understood on two legs and on all four, by all those who would need to know. As a result, some werewolf signs are direct cognates with hobosign, while others are completely unique, and others are modifications of previously existing signs. Some are derived from the appearance of preexisting objects, and some even may have roots in occult symbols. For instance, the symbol for unattended livestock is a roughly scratched shepherd’s crook laying down, while the symbol for silver, a crescent moon, seems alchemical in nature, and still the most common symbol for other large predators seems to be derived from the constellation ursa major. The meaning of a symbol can be altered by flipping or rotating it. For instance, the symbol for night, a full moon casting light downwards, can be inversed to indicate daytime, the rising sun. 
Complex ideas are conveyed through the interaction of multiple symbols, sometimes arraigned in a line like a sentence, other times by mixing and overlapping one another, similar to bindrunes, and in yet other instances, by placing symbols within one another. How such signs are written and read vary from region to region, but are usually relatively easy to decipher based upon context and the appearance.
