LEARNER PROFILE

My Grade 10 EGD learners are a group of bright, hardworking, and proficient first-language English speakers. They are highly engaged in academic and extracurricular activities, showing a strong interest in sports, particularly rugby, and enjoying popular trends like TikTok and Netflix series such as Outer Banks, The Perfect Couple, Good Doctor, and Friends. Music also plays an important role in their lives, and they are very comfortable using technology, and regularly interacting with devices like cell phones, laptops, and iPads.

Academically, these learners display impressive strengths, particularly their ability to think quickly and understand topics well. They can make notes when asked, but one of their key weaknesses is that they seldom refer back to those notes, which affects their retention of important information, especially the steps involved in drawing. Another area they struggle with is reading comprehension; many tend to skim over questions and dive straight into tasks, which can lead to mistakes or misunderstandings.

In terms of prior knowledge, these students bring with them a foundational understanding of sketches from their Grade 9 technology class, which contributes to their grasp of EGD concepts. The classroom environment is diverse, reflecting a mix of cultural backgrounds. Although behavior problems can sometimes be a barrier, with a few students disturbing the class, the teacher has developed effective behavioral management strategies to keep the learning environment productive.

While there are no identified gifted learners in the class, some students do require extra time for exams. The school is well-resourced with interactive whiteboards, projectors, textbooks, and a solid socio-economic foundation that ensures learners have access to necessary learning materials. Additionally, the school is capable of providing support to families in need, fostering a supportive learning community for all students.

These drawings teach learners to represent objects using isometric and non-isometric lines, including hidden details, and auxiliary views. Mastering these skills is crucial for mechanical design and engineering work, as learners can visualize complex objects in a realistic 3D form, developing spatial awareness and precision in technical drawing.

In the lesson on isometric drawings, several teaching and learning theories are used:

Constructivism: Learners build on prior knowledge (e.g., freehand drawing techniques learned earlier) and real-world objects to understand new concepts.

Cognitive Learning Theory: The teacher encourages comparison and critical thinking by comparing 2D and 3D representations, helping learners process new information.

Experiential Learning: The mini demonstration involves active participation, giving learners hands-on experience drawing both 2D and 3D shapes, reinforcing their learning through practice.

Social Learning Theory: Peer discussions encourage learners to share and refine their ideas collaboratively.

This combination helps cater to different learning styles and reinforces knowledge through interaction, observation, and direct practice.
