There is so much that goes into the collaborative process and I have learned so much though the process. In each of the modules that we went through I felt my skills develop as a collaborator and it has definitely improved from when I first started. Some things that I learned through this process has been to trust myself as an artist and to be expansive and flexible. Every time we were grouped for a new project each person brought something unique to the table and we were able to work through them. I am the type of person that likes to have their things in order and I usually take the lead in projects. With this collaborative process I have learned to gather, discuss, delegate, and take action. One of the biggest things that helped in getting ideas on their feet was to literally do just that. Once we landed on an idea we just tried to get it on its feet as quick as we could and create. After it was up we were able to create meaning and build off of it to make something really great! Once we landed on one we would run with it and develop more in depth as we talked through it. I feel like this is where a lot of the collaboration took place because we would combine, modifying, and brainstorming ways to accommodate each of team members ideas and thoughts. There really weren’t any bad ideas that came through most of the time, they either pushing us towards our goals or showing us what we didn’t want to do. This display of collaboration really helped me think differently about ideas and expanded my thoughts on how art could look and how it was developed. Sometimes I can get stubborn and stuck on my way of doing things when I feel really confident in them and I know it will work, but this was a wonderful way to really practice listening and my attentiveness to others. One thing I found helpful in collaboration was to ask a lot of questions for clarification and more information. When creating I try to incorporate things that I genuinely enjoy and things that I would like to see on stage. I wouldn’t do something just to do, I have to understand it and believe in it a little bit. I try to stay from anything that would compromise my personal values that I hold true to myself. Thankfully I haven’t been put in a situation that would call for that, but I know that I have a strong conviction for what I want my name to be attached to in art. I like to include concepts that are relative positive in nature and can be interpreted different ways. I am drawn to abstract, meta, roundabout work that can be understood and personalized. Of course there is a theme behind it, but I like to leave it open sometimes. Throughout this course I didn’t feel like my values were compromised at any point, but rather expanded as I was able to incorporate more ways to collaborate and listen.
