In Flint, Michigan there was hard economic times in 1936. The first flint sit-down strike took place against General Motors.

Buddy is a black boy suffering from the effects of the Great Depression. He goes West with everyone else looking for jobs and his Father.

Food is already hard enough to get but to make matters worse, the Dust Bowl is making it harder.

Christopher Paul Curtis was born in Flint, Michigan.

After High School he worked in the car business at Flint's historic Fisher Body Plant.

Most of his writing ws influenced by his family:
- His Grandfather who was a Negro Baseball League pitcher.
-His Grandfather, bandleader Herman E. Curtis, Sr., of Herman Curtis and the Dusky Devastators of the Depression ("Christopher Paul Curtis")
