저희 모둠은 일상생활에서 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있고 저희가 모두 공감할 수 있는 주제를 생각하다 학교에서 급식을 먹은 후 많이 버려지는 음식물 쓰레기들이 떠올랐고 또한 요즈음 지구온난화가 큰 문제인데 음식물 쓰레기를 버릴때 온실가스인 메탄가스가 나온다는 사실을 알고 이 주제를 선정하게 되었습니다.

저희 모둠은 학교에서 일반적으로 버려지는 음식물 쓰레기의 양을 조사하고 음식물 쓰레기들의 처리방법, 음식물 쓰레기의 처리비용 등의 내용을 소개하고 음식물 쓰레기는 잘게 갈려 일부는 비료로 재활용 되지만 대부분 땅속에 묻어 버리는 것이 일반적인데 그럴경우 나오는 메탄가스가 환경에 미치는 영향을 소개하고 음식물 쓰레기를 줄이는 방법 등을 소개 할 것 입니다.

 As human society has evolved, a variety of human activities have emerged. These actions cause an increase in the number of endangered species. Let's look at three examples of human actions that endanger.  

 The first example is poaching. Poaching killed many animals. One example is the black rhinoceros. The black rhinoceros's horn is employed in numerous traditional rituals as a hilt material, an aphrodisiac, and an antidote. These uses have led to poaching happening. Then, between 1970 and 1992, 96% of the Black rhinoceros population perished. In addition, the WAF editorial team said, “Thousands of endangered species died every year.”  

 Next, consider global warming. According to a UN report from 2019, global warming has endangered 1 million of the world's 8 million species. Earth temperature has an impact on sex since it determines the sex of most reptiles and fish. This causes a gender imbalance. Consider the sea turtle as an example. Males are born at temperatures below 28°F, whereas females are born at temperatures over 28°F. In 2018, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and WWF's Australian branch collaborated to report that the gender ratio of green sea turtles born on Australia's Great Barrier Reef is 116: 1. If this continues, they might lose the ability to procreate.  

 The final one is the destruction of habitat. Currently, habitat destruction is being caused by deforestation, urbanization, and transportation infrastructure development. Additionally, US experts reported that it was the primary factor in the extinction of roughly 21 species.  

 As previously stated, human activities cause significant difficulties in the ecosystem. It's time for us to start doing eco-friendly things to preserve the diversity of animals. What are you waiting for? Let us create a world where both animals and humans can be happy.

The environmental issue is perceived as an urgent task in modern society, as our actions increasingly impact the Earth's ecosystem, including problems like global warming, climate change, ecosystem destruction, and air pollution, directly or indirectly affecting us and future generations. In this context, we need to find and implement solutions for sustainable living and environmental protection. Emphasizing the importance of environmental issues, actions are required on three levels: government, businesses, and individuals. 

Firstly, governments must enact laws and policies for environmental pollution regulation and prevention. This includes imposing penalties or fines on polluters and providing incentives such as subsidies or tax benefits to eco-friendly businesses, including low-carbon green growth policies and energy efficiency labeling schemes. 

Secondly, businesses should strive to minimize their negative environmental impacts and address existing issues by installing pollution control facilities, refurbishing and replacing outdated facilities, simplifying product distribution processes, and using eco-friendly packaging materials. 

Thirdly, citizens need to actively participate in environmental protection efforts by supporting activities of citizen groups like Greenpeace. Greenpeace, for instance, conducted performances on the Han River to advocate for microplastic regulation and delivered a petition with over 20,000 signatures to the Prime Minister's Office to urge environmental protection. Citizens should endorse the efforts of such groups and monitor corporate environmental pollution to contribute effectively. 

These three measures are actions we can take to address global environmental issues. Environmental problems have significant impacts on our lives, future generations, and the Earth's ecosystem, making them issues we can no longer postpone. Collective cooperation is essential to tackle this issue. Hoping that our efforts contribute to preserving the Earth and all living beings for a sustainable future, we must work together to create a more eco-friendly and sustainable world.

Pesticides are substances that are widely used in agriculture and households to protect people, animals, and plants. They can have beneficial effects, such as protecting crops and people, increasing yields, and controlling pests, but they also have a significant impact on the environment and our lives. Then, Let's explore how these pesticides affect the environment and our lives. 

First, pesticides pollute the environment. Pesticides remain in the soil for a long time, polluting the soil and can negatively affect the plants and animals that grow in it. According to a research team from a university in Sydney, Australia, nearly 80 percent of insecticides decompose and persist in the soil for a long time. Studies in various European countries have shown that waterways are contaminated with pesticides and antibiotics. The researchers said their analysis of the water collected from European waterways has identified several species of pesticides. 

Second, pesticides have a negative impact on the wild animals. Pesticides severely damage wild animals.  For example, it causes great damage to honeybees, which are essential for many crops and are important in ecosystems among wild animals. In 2014, a research team at National Taiwan University released a study showing that pesticide contamination caused dysfunction in honeybees. Honeybees form highly social colonies where communication is crucial.  However, with pesticide use, honeybees interfere with communication. In response, Prof. May Berenbaum from UIUS said, "This is because pesticides cause problems with honeybees' sense of smell, which interferes with their communication." A decline in populations of important species like honeybees could disrupt the ecosystem. 

Lastly, pesticides harm humans, too. Exposure to pesticides can cause health issues in humans, including headaches. In this regard, Davis, director of UC's Institute for Environmental Health Sciences, said, "Even very low levels of substances in pesticides can cause serious problems in humans." In addition, pesticides can affect mental health. Studies have shown that people exposed to pesticides are more likely to experience anxiety and despair. 

In conclusion, pesticides pollute the environment, negatively affect wildlife, and even harm people. We should consider their negative effects and try to reduce pesticide use. Even small actions to reduce pesticide use can significantly improve the environment and our lives.

 What comes to your mind if you think of AI? Some of you will think of “Chat GPT,” a conversation-based AI chatbot or “AlphaGo,” an AI go program which beat human go game masters. Nowadays, AI technologies are applied to protecting the environment while saving endangered species, sorting out thrown trash, and washing used plastic cups and bottles.  

 First, AI technology is being used to save endangered species. As global warming has become severe, glaciers and ice sheets are melting rapidly. So, animals such as polar bears, whales, and seals, which are living in the Arctic, are losing their habitats.  The endangered species living in the Arctic are difficult to track because they live in the remote places and they are moving quickly. To solve the problem, AI technology tracks targeted animals with image deep learning. It can even figure out the change of the populations which are living under the water through a sonar, a device used for finding things that are underwater by using sound wave. Dr. Erin Moreland of the Alesska Hydroxyl Center said it took a year to find from 7,000 to 9,000 animals in a million images with visual and infrared cameras, but AI was able to drastically reduce the time. 

 Second, AI technologies are playing important roles in sorting out thrown trash and increasing the rate of recycling. When we humans sort out trash, it is easy to miss out much trash. Missed trash will have to get buried or burnt. In order to solve the problem, a start-up company named Aetech(에이트테크) developed an AI based trash sorting machine called Atron. This machine has replaced the work of human beings. Atron recognizes trash through AI image scanning technology and sorts out trash with an AI robot. After using the AI machine, the speed of trash sorting increased 240 percent and the cost of trash sorting decreased 279 percent. 

 Third, AI technologies are being used to wash used plastic cups and bottles. When we recycle plastic cups and bottles, if the cups and bottles have much dirty substances, it is difficult to recycle them. To solve the problem, Inobus, a social venture company developed a eco-friendly plastic bottle sorting and washing machine called 쓰샘. If a user empties plastic bottles and puts them into the machine, the machine washes the plastic bottles. Thanks to the innovative AI technology of 쓰샘, the machines have been placed in many public places and buildings and increased the recycling rate of plastic cups and bottles.  

 In conclusion, AI technology is playing a revolutionary role in the field of environmental protection. These technologies are helping to protect the global environment by protecting animals from extinction and improving waste disposal and recycling. Furthermore, advances in AI technology are expected to help solve more environmental problems in the future. These innovations will serve as important tools as we work to create a healthier, more sustainable planet.

As environmental problems continue to grow these days, the need for environmental education becomes increasingly vital. Consequently, many countries have made environmental education mandatory. But why is it so crucial? 

Firstly, environmental education encourages a sustainable lifestyle. Through this education, we reflect on our choices and learn to use resources efficiently. This reflection helps us devise strategies to minimize our environmental impact. For instance, the Bucheon Office of Education actively promotes this by publishing comprehensive environmental education programs and textbooks. Such initiatives help us understand how to live in harmony with our planet. 

Secondly, environmental education boosts awareness of environmental issues. It equips us with the knowledge to wisely manage Earth's resources, comprehend environmental challenges, and recognize our responsibilities in environmental conservation. This knowledge not only raises awareness but also spurs practical action. For example, Finland has introduced environmental education for seven-year-olds to instill a sense of responsibility towards the environment from an early age. 

Thirdly, environmental education nurtures creative and innovative thinking, enhancing problem-solving skills. Given the complexity of environmental issues, this kind of education proves invaluable. A study by Professor Kim Bum-soo of Konkuk University reveals that environmental education increases children's sensitivity by 57.4% and boosts their social skills. 

To sum up, environmental education is indispensable in shaping a sustainable future. It guides us towards eco-friendly lifestyles and plays a pivotal role in our overall education.

 Have you ever paid attention to marine waste? According to the Marine Environment Information Portal, marine waste increases from 31,817 EA (unit of number) to 182,374 EA and 78,476 EA from 2018 to 2023, and then decreases. I don’t think you can understand how serious the marine waste problem is by presenting only numbers like this. If a lot of marine waste is generated, the problem may worsen because the scope and target of the impact of this waste expands. Waste must be collected early before this problem worsens, but due to the nature of the ocean, it is difficult to locate marine waste, which accelerates the severity of marine waste. So is there no way to dispose of marine waste? Now, I will share the findings of my research on marine waste. 

 First, let's learn about marine waste. Marine waste refers to waste that is introduced, dumped, or abandoned in the ocean or beaches in accordance with Article 2 (Definition) of the Marine Waste and Marine Pollution Sediment Management Act. 

 The first cause of such marine waste is that street waste, damaged structures, and piles of abandoned waste generated on land enter the sea through streams and rivers during torrential rains, heavy rains, and floods. Small and light items are often blown by the wind or enter the sea through drainage ditches, even during light rain. It is also caused by nets and fishing rods thrown away by fishing workers. 

 So what kind of damage does marine waste, caused by these factors, inflict on us? First of all, one-tenth of shipping accidents are due to marine wastes. If ropes, fishing nets, and so on. abandoned in the sea become entangled in the ship's propulsion engine, or if a plastic bag is sucked into the ship's pipes, problems will occur in the operation of the engine, making navigation impossible, and an accident may occur. Second, this reduces fishing productivity. This is because there are cases where not only the catch but also trash is caught in the fishing net, so more work is needed in the process of picking out the waste one by one. Thirdly, the population of sea creatures will decrease. If a fishing line, rope, or net gets caught in the neck, legs, beak, or wings of a sea animal, it will be unable to avoid enemies or catch prey, greatly hindering its survival. If the population of marine life decreases due to human intervention, it can cause an imbalance in the food chain and cause long-term ecological damage. This damage can cause great damage because it not only affects the ocean, but also organically affects humans. 

 Now, let's find out how the country is responding to the problems caused by marine waste and what countermeasures individuals can implement. First, the country is carrying out cooperation projects between local governments and the central government by signing a ‘River and Estuary Waste Management Agreement’ in all five major river basins. We also operate a waste buoy recovery system to ensure that Styrofoam buoys for aquaculture are recycled instead of being discarded. Garbage that has already entered the ocean is collected and processed to minimize further damage. Also, measures individuals can take include not littering on the beach without permission, taking trash home with them when leaving, and not discarding fishing rods or nets in streams or rivers while fishing 

 So far, we have learned about what marine waste is and how much damage it is currently causing to us. If we pay attention to marine waste, recognize its seriousness, and make efforts to prevent the problem from getting worse, we will be able to prevent further damage in the future.

 From now on, an increase of 2 degrees Celsius in global temperature can cause many problems such as extreme climate, ecosystem destruction, and ocean acidification. To prevent this, we must limit global temperature rise. How can we prevent global temperature rise? The main cause of global warming is greenhouse gases. We should try to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. How can we prevent global temperature rise by 2 degrees Celsius? According to Dr. Schmitz from Yale University in the United States, saving wildlife is a way to protect the Earth. Now, I will explain three key reasons why we need to protect wildlife. 

 One big reason is that when a particular animal species goes extinct, the ecosystem can become a carbon source. According to Professor Schmitz, when a particular species goes extinct in a forest, the trees that absorbed carbon dioxide disappear and new organisms that release carbon may emerge, altering the ecosystem and accelerating global warming. In summary, we must protect wildlife and prevent the ecosystem from being converted into a carbon source.  
 Another important reason is that wildlife can sequester carbon naturally. Dr. Schmitz, a professor of social ecology at Yale University in the United States, studied marine life and nine other wildlife species, including whales, sharks, gray wolves, antelopes, sea otters, civets, elephants in the African forest and American bison. According to the survey, annually capture an additional 6.41 billion tons of carbon dioxide. Conserving wildlife helps protect the Earth as it captures significant amounts of carbon dioxide when protected or restored.  
Finally, wildlife can prevent rapid climate change. According to Professor Schmitz, wild animals play an important role in controlling the carbon cycle in ecosystems through a wide range of processes such as food collection and nutrient absorption. Take the Forest elephants as an example. The forest elephants eat low-carbon trees and their waste helps spread seeds for high-carbon trees. And they also play an important role in maintaining forest diversity. In other words, through the actions mentioned above, forest elephants diversify ecosystems and control the climate by absorbing environmental pollutants. In conclusion, by saving wildlife, we can prevent rapid climate change.    

 In conclusion, Wildlife conservation can capture natural carbon, and since wildlife activities themselves control the carbon cycle in the ecosystem, the ecosystem can become a carbon source if wildlife is absent. Therefore, wildlife must be protected in order to prevent the ecosystem from converting into a carbon source and accelerating global warming.  

  The most significant development in the history of airplanes occurred in 1969 after the Wright brothers' flight in 1903. This signifies a new era where spaceflight is possible, and has since become a new dream for mankind. With the continuous development of technology, airplanes are currently used for a variety of purposes, not only for large-scale transportation businesses but also for small personal use. However, modern airplanes still face environmental and safety problems. Above all, the environmental problem is very serious. Problems such as air pollution, noise, and fuel consumption caused by large-scale commercial transportation are still serious.  

According to the 2004, European Environment Survey, If a single plane passenger travels 1km, the amount of CO2 emitted is 289g, which is twice as much as 104g car and about 20 times higher than that a 14g train. In the other words, it can be said that airplanes can emit the most carbon dioxide among transportation.  

These issues may lead us to focus on the sustainable aviation industry. First, by changing the shape of the wings of an airplane or by reducing the weight of the airplane to secure fuel efficiency and develop new fuels to replace fossil fuels, such as biofuels. Second, developing electric aircraft instead of conventional aircraft can also be mentioned. Solar airplanes are being developed for long-distance flights as well as solving air pollution and climate problems in an environmentally friendly way. Electric airplanes are being developed for short-distance flights, but they are also planning to electrify long-distance flights.  

 Lastly, this is an example of the introduction of electric airplanes.  DHL Express is striving to improve carbon efficiency in accordance with its goal of creating a zero-carbon logistics environment. DHL Group is striving to reduce CO2 by 2030 by developing alternative aviation fuels, expanding supply of electric vehicles, and introducing climate-neutral facilities.  

It is true that these developments and achievements always come at a cost. The development of airplanes must go hand in hand with new challenges such as environmental and safety issues, and we all must work to solve them. In the future, airplanes will continue to develop and change, and we will continue to create new technologies and innovative services in response to those changes, leading to new challenges for the advancement of mankind.

Why p-book is replaced by e-book

The phase of Industry 4.0 come through when there is no language, the Renaissance. People still read a book despite living in the information age that they can know what they want to know with a single click. Book which was called a gold mine of knowledge from old times. Literature or no literature, it will surely have much to do with human rationality. However, everything should change in tune with the times. The launch of ‘e-book’ that has tremendous repercussions on p-book market. What is the reason for replacement from p-book to e-book?

The phase of industry 4.0, in other words, the era of global warming. A slogan is derived from fear that the earth indeed may be destroyed in a few years and currently all of corporations and nations were putting enormous attention and budget in the environmental problem. E-book is the one of the attention. Before launching e-book, of course ‘book’ means the book made of paper. Cutting down trees, making paper of the trees, putting ink on that paper, printing hundreds, thousands, millions of books. But e-book is different. E-book is the one which doesn't require wood, a piece of paper, a blob of ink. And e-book reader can store an average of 1100 books. According to a study of UCLA, it claims that the amount of energy needed to make 1100 books is more than 6 times the amount of energy needed to make an e-reader, and e-reader can reduce carbon emissions because e-book is distributed in on-line compared to carbon emissions generated in process of p-book's distribution.

As I said earlier, today a lot of people still enjoy books. Exactly, people who enjoy books only enjoy books. There are lots of people who don’t read books. They may think ‘Why do I buy books that is more than 10000won?’. To these people, e-book is ideal. It’s natural. It isn’t different from eliminating the cost of ingredients, so of course the price is much lower. For example, The printed version of <Pride and Prejudice> by the publisher, Hyundai Culture Center is about 10000won, while the e-book version by the same publisher is about 5000won. It’s two times cheaper and it’s at price people who have not usually read books can afford, so it can encourage them to read books.

Finally e-book is a customizable user service. It is considered one of the most significant characteristics or advantages of e-book. E-book can read all of books that you bought anytime anywhere if you have one e-book reader(No e-book reader need. If you have only your phone!) unlike thick and heavy p-book. It’s also disabled friendly. On the top e-book sites or apps like ridibooks, yes24, aladdin, a person who is visually impaired can read a book by the audio book functions such as ‘reading’ or ‘listening’.

Thus, today global warming and environmental pollution is serious, it seems like unavoidable thing that p-book is replaced by e-book. Why don’t we pay attention to environmental problems, buy and read an e-book instead of a p-book?

Hello! I'm Dahye, the head of the “Loving and Protecting the Environment (L.P.E)”club. I am excited to announce that our club is recruiting new freshmen members!

The purpose of our club is to protect the environment by conducting various events.

In contemporary society, we can easily see trash littering the street. According to South Gyeongsang Province Daily, littering significantly contributes to air pollution. Therefore, we need effective solutions. Let's contribute to the environment through these activities. The activities we will do are as follows:

First, we will pick up trash around school. This activity takes place every Friday after school. You will be responsible for recycling the waste we collect.

Second, we will host a campaign to offer a free soft drink to anyone who brings their own tumbler. The intent of this event is to decrease the use of disposable products.

The third activity is planting a tree. You will bring the seeds of a tree you want to plant in the school‘s flower bed. By planting trees, we help reduce air pollution. Later, these planted trees will be systematically managed. Our club has many beneficial activities planned.

Our club conducts activities that help society as a whole. You can develop a sense of responsibility for environmental issues. Developing environmental awareness from a young age can lead to practicing sustainable living. I look forward to seeing your skills and enthusiasm in our club.

플라스틱 빨대와 같이 환경을 위해 줄여야한다고 강조되는 것은 바다쓰레기에 소량에 블과하고 그물이 큰 비율을 차지하고 있다는 것에 놀랐다. 또한 무분별한 남획도 바다생태계에 큰 문제가 되는데 생계를 위해 이를 묵인하고 있다.

 These days, concerns about space garbage are increasing. Space garbage means artificial object that is not used as useful purposes no more, but still remains in space. As the name suggests, space garbage is waste that we have to clean up. Now, we’re going to find out why space garbage is harmful and why we have to solve the problem. 

 Space garbage impede progress in space. The number of space garbage is hundreds of millions and  each of size is highly varied. And they exist from very high earth orbit to low orbit, which include the orbit of ISS(international space station and satellites). So, collisions between satellites and space debris can occur. In need, in order to avoid space debris, ISS performed evasion maneuvers several times and cases that satellites crashed with space garbage are dozens of times. If the number of space garbage increases, these incidents will occur frequently and finally, it will disturb the advance to space. 

 Not only does space garbage bring bad effect to the outside of the Earth, but it can influence the Earth's interior. If space garbage enters the atmosphere, it will burn due to atmospheric friction. That time, that process will emit harmful substances that hurts our respiratory organ, so there can be damage of human life. Also, because of burning, greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide will be able to be emitted, so global warming will be able to accelerate. It suggests that space garbage can bring bad effect to the Earth’s environment. 

 Space garbage can damage human being directly. For example, according to ZDnet Korea, 2.9 tons of ISS space garbage fell into a home In Mexico. Fortunately, there are no damage of human life. But if the number of space garbage increases, disasters such as fires and blackouts will occur frequently and it will bring loss of lives.  

 Space garbage poses a threats to us even now. In the outside and the inside, space garbage is dangerous. If we neglect this problem, we will have various disasters that can hurt us and our environment. We need to pay more attention to space garbage and work to solve the problem.

 Next, consider global warming. According to a UN report from 2019, global warming has endangered 1 million of the world's 8 million species. Earth temperature has an impact on sex since it determines the sex of most reptiles and fish. This causes a gender imbalance. Consider the sea turtle as an example. Males are born at temperatures below 28°F, whereas females are born at temperatures over 28°F. In 2018, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and WWF's Australian branch collaborated to report that the gender ratio of green sea turtles born on Australia's Great Barrier Reef is 116: 1. If this continues, they might lose the ability to procreate.

One of the numerous benefits and resources that Earth provides for us is the environment. On the other hand, contamination of the environment brought on by humans damages the planet. Earth Day was established on April 22nd for this reason. We practice environmental conservation on Earth Day by participating in a variety of eco-friendly campaigns.
