This mass extinction event caused the border between the Triassic and Jurassic period events, around 201.3 million years ago. It is one of the major extinction events as it affected sea life, and made most all land animals extinct. It affected planet Earth in a huge way, and left it in a lifeless wasteland.

One fossil that researchers found is a 20 inch thick wall, which contains preserved fossils and traces of certain elements from the asteroid impact that killed all the dinosaurs. One of those elements were iridium. They've also found certain rocks, or index fossils, dating back to roughly 50 million years before the Triassic-Jurassic extinction event. They have also found a tetrapod from around 200 million years ago. It was one of the living things that did survive, and not get wiped out altogether.

During the Triassic-Jurassic time period, many animals went extinct. New research shows that amphibious animals were wiped out. But because the fossil rate is incomplete, its difficult to tell how fast this happened and how. But the biggest animals to go extinct were the dinosaurs. Researchers all believe that an asteroid impact ruined it all for the dinosaurs. They believe that the impact was so big that dust rose up and covered the sun all over Earth. It stopped photosynthesis, making a huge disruption for the food chain. Everything that wasn't a scavenger or very small died. Also in India, the Deccan Traps spewed a huge amount of lava making it more difficult for the dinosaurs to survive.

The Severity

The severity of this extinction event was massive. A whole species was knocked out by one asteroid and the Earth was left in a dusty, lava filled ruin. Although marine life and birds survived, most all of land animals couldn't. It happened so quickly for these animals, but their death took a long while. Living in that environment with no food for the amount of time they did must have been awful. They didn't know it was coming, and they didn' know their death was coming and soon. This asteroid left Earth in a complete ruin, and it took a long time to recover.

Scientific Hypothesis

My hypothesis is that this asteroid left this Earth in a ruin. It made dinosaurs extinct in a very fast yet painful way. It affected plant life by the sun being covered in dust and the carbon dioxide it left on Earth. With the lack of food and habitat, animals died out slowly.
