Teachers are regarded as agents of change in any society by Judi Harris

Our first conversation comes from our semester theme "Changes"

By Salomo Mekondjo Nambinga
"Teachers are regarded as agents of change in any society. Their roles do not stop in the classroom, as educators and architects of a well-educated nation but are community activists too. Hence, they are expected to promote social change in schools and in communities in which they serve on several issues. "

In our Learning Community, our courses have common outcomes. Specifically SPF 203 and Exe 100. We will examine the complex and dynamic relationships between school and society. Develop an understanding of the history of education in the United States in relationship to economic, social, technological, and political change, including how history relates to the treatment and education of individuals with disabilities.

Listen to the song, dial into the lyrics
Watch and listen to the young poet laureate Amanda Gorman read "The Hill We Climb".
Focusing on Gholdy Muhammad's "Cultivating Genius" tell & show how this song, this poem will inspire you to think about Identity, Resistance, and Social Change/Hope,
1. identity: as an agent of change; consider how you can be an upstander; not a bystander, what is one thing that you would change.
2. skills: compare AND contrast the poem and the song
3. intellect: reflect on both the song and the poem, what moment in time in YOUR LIFE does it make you think of
4. criticality: who or what do you think the song and poem are meant to inspire; encouraging them to be agents of change
5. joy: share one line from either the poem or song that brings YOU joy and tell why

Amanda Gorman's poem “The Hill We Climb” focused on the future of America and unity. One thing she said was “We will not be turned around or interrupted by intimidation because we know our inaction and inertia will be the inheritance of the next generation, become the future.” This was powerful and resonated with me because if we do nothing as a nation or even as people to fight for change then we will be leaving a broken nation to the next generation. Which can eventually lead to a continuous cycle of generations being bystanders instead of upstanders. Our futures relies on what we do to change the present. Personally this was very inspiring.

2Pacs and Michael Jackson’s song Change the Man in the Mirror focused on self reflection and considering new possibilities and hope for change within society. The song lists some examples of society issues like homelessness and limited food access. It encourages and inspires people to think about ways to change society. I feel like this song captured society's issues and shined light on them perfectly. The song allows people to really think and consider society’s issues and everything that needs to be done to change it.

Gholdy Muhammad’s “cultivating genius” focused on bringing out the inner genius in young people. She focused on the importance of young people's skills, and their identity to help them achieve academically and personally. She also mentions how students should be taught to speak for themselves and should be taught not only their identity but others as well. Her approach differs from the traditional way of teaching. I agree with her way of thinking. I feel like teachers need to be taught how to teach using the child’s identity and teach every student about their identity and others as well. We don’t see that much in education but if we change that it would impact students and the way they view themselves. Stereotypes would be less likely to exist due to people learning each other’s culture and identity. The students would also be more engaged in school because they would be able to connect to the lessons they are being taught. This would also allow teacher to student and student to student connections to be made. This would allow students to grow academically and personally just like Gholdy Muhammad stated in her book.

1 Identity: As an agent of change I can be a up-stander by holding people accountable to their actions when they do something wrong to me or others .Instead of keeping my emotions bottled in and being a bystander to any harm from someone else coming towards me or others . One thing I would change in the world is people being homeless or poor in first world countries.

2 Skills: Amanda Gorman speech and Tupac Shukar and Michael Jackson song had similarities and differences. One similarity they have is they both show how social justice is needed in the world and how we all need to unite to make a difference in the world. One difference between the song and poem is that the poem impacts more people that watch news or have political believes and the song impacts more urban communities in America they both have a different audience they are effecting and targeting.

3 Intellect: Both the song and poem was to target change and make us human connect more no matter our differences for example our skin color, different religions or cultures. The song and poem made me go back in time when I was a kid and I watched a Martin Luther King Documentary.

4 Criticality: I believe The song and poem is suppose to inspire everyone in the world especially in America. I believe the goal of the song and poem is for us humans to organize and be woke to be the change for the future generations and how social justice and activism is needed in the world.

5 Joy: In the poem “The hill we climb”by Amanda Gorman a line that brings me joy was when she said “our eyes in the future history has its eyes on us, this is the era of just redemption we feared it at its inception we did not feel prepared to be the heirs of such of a terrifying hour but within it we found the power to chapter a new to offer hope and laughter “. This quote shows that we humans still have redemption no matter what and hope is very important for us humans. It also shows that we are history and the future generations are gonna learn from us.

Gholdy Muhammad's said " You can't stand in any room and discuss a topic you don't have knowledge on"

Explanation: This resonates with us because not understanding a topic or knowledge of that topic makes you less intelligent, you shouldn't engage or interfere with a topic you can't explain. The lack of knowledge is a problem because it's saying that you are uneducated. They say knowing and understanding it's two different words because you can know a lot about something and don't understand it.

Identity: As an agent of change, we can be upstanders by standing up for discrimination in today's society that affected our ancestors and still affects us in today's society. This world is full of injustice, racism, discrimination, cultural appropriation, and racial justice. These affect urban people because they won't put differences aside. We are human beings we bleed the same blood. The one difference is are skin colors are different if we just can come together and stop fearing colored people and come together as a community everything would be better. In order to change this world, we have to put our differences aside and make America a better country for once and for all.

Skills: Amanda Gorman's poem, Tupac, and Michael Jackson's song, one similarity is they both talks about a change in America. The difference between the song and the poem is Amanda Gorman's talks about how we need to finish the system and she focuses so more so on the future of America and how African Americans build up strength because we went through a lot like slavery, Jim Crow laws and etc. and the decades we have grown stronger and powerful. Then the song talks about how we need to change society and integrate to make a difference in the world.

Intellect: The objective of the poem and song was to make a change in the world and to unite Americans and Urban people (non- Americans). A moment in time where the song and poem make me think of life is when I was in 8th grade and some of the 8th-grade teachers were talking about the 8th-grade students and were saying how we act like animals and we weren't going to make it in life. This right here made me think I was cable of doing anything and I can make it in the world.

Criticality: We think the poem and the song were meant to inspire young people because the world revolves around them. People older and younger have voices that need to be heard because it's telling the world that we are standing for something. We have to use our voice to take a stand in this world because without our voices being heard things won't change in this society or world if we don't stand up or talk about it things will never change until we do something about it.

Joy: One line from the song that brings us joy is when they said "You gotta get it right, while you got the time
You can't close your, your mind!" this brings us joy because our minds/thoughts are the most powerful thing in the world and it all it takes is to make this world a better place and take a stand for justice, freedom. and rights. We all can do this if we stand together and not against each other. The more we fight the less things won't change.

Gholdy Mohammed uses "cultivated genius" to explain to us and talk to us about how every person has a genius inside them. What she means by this is that everyone has a weakness and everyone has something they're good at. Some people find what they're good at before others because as a society we are shown to look away if you look a certain way. This is why some people’s genius may be overlooked because of the way they look. For example if a black and white student tells their teacher they want to be lawyers most likely a teacher would help the white student before the black student. We are told that if you are not like the rest, you're not talented. That you need to change and that you're not good enough. But you don’t have to be like everyone else in order to be talented. You can follow your own path and do things your own way. Don't compare yourself, go at your own pace. If you were like everyone else you wouldn't be uniquely you. But some people don’t understand that because the people that are supposed to encourage us are the ones that take our courage away.

Amanda Gorman talks about how our nation isn’t necessarily broken, it's unfinished. If we think about where we were 50 years ago we wouldn’t have seen everything we’ve seen now. Back then Obama would have never been president, back then no women would have ran for president and back then we wouldn’t have had a black woman as vice president. We think about our society as damaged but we don’t see the improvements that have happened from 50 years ago to now. She says our society is unfinished not broken, we as people have so much to do before our society is even close to being finished and we might not ever get to it being all the way finished because there is still people who look at others as dangerous, you can be walking the street and if you just look a tad different there out to get you.

2pac & Michael Jackson talk about making a change. They explain how people go through poverty, how people kill each other and how we are supposed to stick together. They explain how cops kill blacks for no reason. People should see each other as family. There's other ways to solve problems instead of killing each other. If everyone makes a change it'll make the world a better place, it'll bring more peace. As a society we need to stand up as a whole and fight together but everyone is against each other so we see people killing people just to kill. We see no justice when one of our own is killed by a cop. They tell us to keep calm because they'll be justice but we are yet to see any. Nobody cares when its one of us, nobody fights for our colored people and when they do its always years from the situation. So we ask ourselves why even fight when at the end the situation will either stay the same or get worse.

1) One thing I would change to become an up stander is to show my community and make them understand that we can all come together as a society and change this world fo r a better one. That we can all coexists in equality and that we should all be treated the same way doesn't matter the color, gender, culture, etc. We have to stop the white privilege and start being more equal because at the end of the day we all come to this world the some way our blood color is the same, it doesn't matter what skin color you are or whether you are rich or not everyone is equal.

2) There is a lot of similarity with the song and poem but at the same time there is differneciality. This song and poem shows us that as society we want peace, equality, freedom, change for a better. Both of this mention a lot of the social issues that right now are affecting us as society. Some of the social issues that the song and poem talked about are racism, inequality, gun violence, medical inequality and a lot more. This social issues are the reason of the diversity that this society has, and I mean a negative diversity. This has bring inequality among races when in reality we are supposed to support each other.

3) A time in my life where the song and poem made me think of the first the day I move to Buffalo and started 7th grade. This open my eyes to a wide new world, new opportunity, new cultures, new languages, and new races. You see I come from Puerto Rico an Island that struggles every day with economy, injustice and lack of education. Is way worst than racism, in this Island kids don't get the right education, opportunity or rights to anything. As society we need to understand that some social issues are being underestimated.

4) I think the song and poem are meant to inspire my generation, our generation. Believe it or not this song and poem has strong lyrics that can push tough adults and youth to created a better society and change this world for the better. This opens our eyes to the fact that society is changing, growing, and thriving in a world where people beliefs and hope are begging tone different than anybody.

5) "I want to make a change for once in my life." This line of the song brings me JOY because it shows that we want to make a change for once in our life that we want this world to be better and healthier where we can support each no matter the race, culture, gender, color skin, we should just come together as a union and make this world rise to a better one.

One thing i would change is police brutality because alot of cops take advantage of the power thier job gives them they think being a super hero is killing or shooting some one so they could STOP but that causes fear to the community.

2. The poem and the song are very simalir they are both describing how they feel about our society nowadays. Also they both express emotion and dissapointment . The difference between the video and the poem is that the poem talks about equality and everyone coming together , and the video talks about how everyone needs to come together to make a DIFFERENCE in the word.

3. The poem and the song made me think of brianna Tyler because she was at peace and was killed in her own house where she was supposed to be safe . i say this because like the song says you have to make the world a better place .

2pac and Michael Jackson song "Change The Man In The Mirror" and Amanda Gorman's "The Hill We Climb" both focused on an issue in America that has been going on for generations. One of the things Amanda said was "Being American is more than a pride we inherit, it's the past we step into and how we repair it." This resonated with me because what she said was influential because I'm an immigrant whose lived in America for almost fourteen years and I believe that racism is still one of the biggest issues but we're progressing much better than before.

Identity:
As an agent of change I can be an upstander by educating those around me about racism and encouraging students to practice equality. I will encourage students to stand up for themselves and other around them.

Skills:
The song and the poem have many similarities and a few differences. The song and the poem both speak on issues such as social injustice and racism. The poem was about togetherness and change. The song was also about change but it emphasized on change starting within first. Change comes with time and if everyone put in a little bit of effort the world would be a better place for the entire human race.

Intellect:
The poem and the song both take me back to second grade, when my predominately white second grade classroom sang "Heal The World." by Michael Jackson. At that time even though I didn't blend in I felt we were all united.

Criticality:
I think both the poem and song are meant to inspire everyone. Social injustices are a threat to justice every where as MLK once said.
