At the very bottom we have the African Slaves, who were imported from Africa to do hard labor. Second we have the Indians, who were a small minority in Mexico, and were also discriminated against. Following this we have the Mulattoes, who were people of African and European ancestry and made up one third of the Afro-Mexican population. On occasion they would also be enslaved, but by the early 19th century there were almost no enslaved Mullatoes. On the 4th level we have the Mestizos, which refers to the result of mixed and European blood, and they were the first group to be designated separately from the Spanish and the Enslaved African Americans. Then we have the Creoles, who were people of direct European descendence that were born in colonized land. They were usually French or Spanish and they were not victims to enslavement or anything of the nature. At the top of the social ladder lie the Peninsulares, who are Spaniards residing in the new colonies that were born in Spain.
