A month before starting "The Social Club" all 6th grade teachers, parents, and students will be email explaining what "The Social Club" is, topics covered, dates, times, and locations will be sent out. Flyers will be hung in the hallways and bathrooms with the same information. A Facebook post will be made on the school's social media account with information about "The Social Club."

If more than 8 students sign up to participate, I will talk to the teachers to narrow the list down to 8 students who need the lessons the most.

Personal invitations will be sent out to each participant one and a half weeks before the meetings start.

Once invitations are sent out, students will have 3 days to accept the invitation and return the consent form.

A screener will be used to assess the participant's willingness to participate in the group.

The screener will be a group screener the day before the meetings start.

In the screening process, the leader will use Rosemarie Smead's "TAP-In" process.

Tell about the Group:

"The Social Club" is a group of 6th-grade students at Hawkins Middle School. Group meetings will be held in the conference room every Wednesday from 7:15 am to 7:45 am for six weeks. Group meetings will start on Wednesday, March 19th until Wednesday, April 23rd.

Lesson topics will be:

1. Communication Skills

2. Empathy

3. Teamwork

4. Self-awareness

5. Active Listening

6. Identifying Emotions

Participation is voluntary, but once you opt-in to attend, members are expected to attend every meeting. Participation in activities and discussions is expected.

The goals of the group will be to meet new people, learn social skills needed for daily life, and have fun.

Confidentiality is the utmost concern in the group. What is said in the group, must remain in the group. If this is broken, the participant will be removed from the group.

Ask the student about his or her interest and commitment.

The leader will ask the students why they want to participate, what they think they will gain from joining the group, and what they understand about the group.

Students will be asked if they can follow all rules and participate in the meetings.

Pick members

Students will be chosen to participate in group sessions if they can adhere to the rules/expectations, their goals align to the topics of the meetings, can keep confidential information private, and can come to all meetings, they will be chosen to participate in "The Social Club."

If a student that was screened is not a great match for the group, another student from the sign-ups will be screened until all 8 slots are full.

Confidentiality is of the utmost importance and students need to know that any rule that is broken is grounds for removal from the group.

Going through this document should allow students time to discuss and reflect on the importance of having rules in a group setting.

Trust will be established by going over rules and expectations during the first meeting.  

This will set the groundwork for trust and for the students to know that confidentiality is 

key.  While discussing confidentiality, it will be stated that we cannot 100% guarantee 

confidentiality, but if someone does break this expectation, then they will be removed 

from the group.

Group members will be expected to cooperate and work together during every meeting.  

In some meetings, students will work together, with a partner, or by themselves.  

Meetings only last 30 minutes and students should be engaged during that 30-minute 

session.  If activities are planned effectively and structured so that every student is 

engaging, students should meet the outcomes anticipated for each meeting.  Check-ins 

will be done weekly with each participant by doing a quick check-in between passing 

periods in the hallway.  The leader will complete a quick check-in to make sure students 

are getting value out of the group meetings.   

During the last meeting, participants will be provided with a certificate of completion.  We 

will have a small celebration of completion with drinks and donuts since the meetings are 

early in the morning.  Each student will be awarded a certificate of what lesson they 

learned the most from based on observations from the leader.  Confidentiality will be 

discussed and made a priority when completing the group meetings.  The leader will 

continue to check in on participants in the hallway and at lunch to make sure they are 

utilizing the tools taught in the meetings. 

“Sec. 33.003.  PARENTAL CONSENT.  The board of trustees of each school district shall adopt guidelines to ensure that written consent is obtained from the parent, legal guardian, or person entitled to enroll the student under Section 25.001(j) for the student to participate in those activities for which the district requires parental consent” (EDUCATION CODE CHAPTER 33.
