The San were not very militarily advanced, so when the Nama from South Africa, the Herero and Damara from Central Africa, invaded, the San was easily defeated. The Central African clans however had troubles at home and halted their advance, and the South African clan followed suit. Finally, the colonial age began as Afrikaaner explorers found the country, the Afrikaaners being a Dutch-German country. The Norwegians and British immediately rushed down to Namibia and started whale hunting in the area, as well as producing livestock. German missionaries teamed up with the British and Norwegians to set up trade avenues through the area. The Afrikaners helped the San, and the San, with their new military, came to dominate the Nama and Damara clans in Central Africa. Eventually, the British started pitching flags up in Namibia, but they figured there were no notable resources and the costs were too great, so they left. This left only one candidate to colonize Namibia, the about ten years old German Empire. The Germans started advancing but were defeated by the Herero, in turn, British forces deployed out to protect British ports. Then the Germans sent settlers out, made settlements, and started colonization. The Herero revolted again, and the Germans and Herero engaged in brutal combat for three years until the Germans used gas and extermination to finally quell the people. The Herero tried a counterattack, but the Germans inflicted two major defeats and sent the Herero running into the Sahel. The Nama joined the Herero remainders in one last attempt and were soundly defeated again. The Germans used terror tactics to finally quell the rest of the resistance in 1907. The Germans finally built cities and mining districts, banks, railroads, and a general society. At the onset of World War I the British controlled South African forces invaded and colonized Namibia. The Germans still kept many diamond mines however. The British eventually subjugated Namibia and completely removed rights for the black people living there. Then, the British began to start the process of annexing Namibia into South Africa. During World War II, the fishing industry on the coast of Namibia exploded, and US orders followed suit. The diamond industry also hit an economic boom. The black people of Namibia received more freedoms as time wore on, and the British eventually left South Africa, leaving the South Africans to manage Namibia. The Namibians had employed a police system that benefited them and was not racist. The Namibians had also severely damaged their own environment via extensive mining and overfishing. Those who could not land jobs, ⅔ of the Namibian population, lived in poverty. Many black revolutions were slammed down with brutal tactics, like public shootings of “suspected,” terrorists. Finally, some Namibian leaders teamed up with Angola, and the next time South Africa invaded Angola, they were swiftly and completely defeated. Angola started pushing into northern Namibia, so South Africa negotiated peace, promising Namibia’s independence. In a miscalculated assault, South African forces massacred the Namibian electoral cooperators, so the UN got involved. The UN set up organized voting, and made sure South Africa was far from interference.
