History of E-waste

Electronic waste, more commonly known as e-waste, is the problem of old electronic devices being disposed of instead of being reused. E-waste has a long and problematic history and is rapidly destroying our planet. In the 1990s, personal computers and other household electronic devices became more common and in turn started the rise of e-waste. The production of e-waste has only rapidly grown since then and now over 50 million tons of e-waste are produced each year. Because of this problem many countries around the world have now started to implement policies and regulations to encourage citizens to properly dispose of e-waste. Countries are beginning to tackle the problem of e-waste which may be able to reverse the history of this problem.

The problem of e-waste is becoming an increasingly bigger problem for the earth as a whole and impacts humans. Only 20% of e-waste is properly disposed of so the other 80% end up in landfills which can contribute to pollution and can release deadly chemicals such as lead and mercury. As a result of these problems, workers can be exposed to these chemicals which can cause diseases, and in some cases cancer. These causes can have very impacting effects on workers and if we solve this problem of e-waste it can stop these deadly impacts.

E-waste is an increasing problem and can have lasting and significant effects on our precious environments. Because of e-waste piling up in landfills it adds to the problem of pollution. Being in a landfill also releases deadly chemicals which leach into soil and water, in turn, polluting it. In addition, when these old electronics are burned, more toxic chemicals are released into the air, contributing to climate change and having other lasting effects on the environment. Electronic waste needs to be properly disposed of or it can have fatal environmental impacts to our planet and these effects may be irreversible.

Solutions to E-waste

Electronic waste is a huge problem and has lasting effects on humans and our environment, but there are many solutions to this problem. The first solution is either reusing or properly recycling e-waste. Our current way of supposedly recycling e-waste is burning it, which is usually fine on a small scale but because of the 50 million tons of e-waste produced each year, the chemicals produced have big impacts on pollution and global warming. Reusing old technology is a great solution however because everyone can do it, we would just have to convince people to instead of buying a new electronic device just reuse their current one until it is no longer usable. Proper recycling is also a good solution as instead of burning e-waste we could extract the working parts which can be recycled to create a new electronic device. In all, the problem of electronic waste is able to be stopped, but we would need to inform everyone to solve this problem.
