I love how the level of engagement changes when you mention something that a scholar told you. e.g., " Student X you seem a little bored. I bet you would rather be playing with your legos." He looks up, I ask him to lean in. "Do you think you could go get 6 red legos?' He returns quickly with legos. I send him back for 4 blue legos, etc. I allow him to use the manipulatives that will allow him to understand and engage in the lesson. He continues to engage.
