I decided to write an article on one of my favorite artists, Brockhampton. I wrote this article because I think they really define what spreading culture is all about and correlating it to this class I think it ties in well with showing that America has some really influential artists. In regards to challenges I did not find much of a challenge because I truly enjoyed writing this and I hope I can show some of my fellow classmates someone new to listen to. I also feel like one thing I could have changed was put a lot more music links, I did not because I did not want to overwhelm anyone with it being an article of course, but with the links given I hope everyone can listen to the messages in their songs as well as how beautiful they portray these messages through their artwork in the music videos. Hopefully I can create some Brockhampton fans, enjoy :)

I wrote an article on the finances behind rap and EDM artists. I wanted to do this because it combines my major of finance and my favorite genres of music. Some of the challenges I faced were finding just how much money is made/lost due to online streaming because there is no clear way to tell. One thing I would have done differently if I had redone my project would be picking different artists to focus on, I based it off my favorites instead of using other ways to pick artists.

I decided to write an article on some of my favorite artists, ten of them actually, and why I think other people should listen to them. I wrote this article because I think they are really great groups/individuals and they all showcase something musical that we have studied in class. I did not find much of a challenge because I truly enjoyed writing this and I hope that I can show some of my classmates some new artists to listen to. The one thing that I would change would be to fully embed the videos into the project instead of just the links, but I still think they still ended up solid. I hope that I can introduce you to some new music!

I wrote a short article describing my experience at live shows recently, and the changes that cell phone use has had on these spaces. I take a look at various social spaces, and how they have been affected by the burgeoning usage of cell phones. I have always felt strongly about limiting where we use our phones, so this project was fun to write and put my ideas down somewhere. If I were to improve on this in the future, I would go more in depth into artists that want to change this, as well as the technology that is being developed to keep phones out. I think I could use a much broader scope, this topic has become really salient recently.

I did my project on what I think is the top protest song from each of societies most prevalent issues like poverty, civil rights, police brutality etc. I wanted to do this topic because it seemed interesting to me and I wanted to link music with real world issues. I wanted to analyze how music can influence and affect society and the issues plaguing it. The hardest part for me was picking one song to represent each issue. I know many people will disagree with my list, but I didn't want to simple pick the most popular song surrounding each issue. If I could do this project again, i might include less description about each song, but more songs because picking just one was very difficult.

We wanted to do this project because we were familiar with the music genre and it has became popular over the past years. However, not everyone know what Kpop is and the history of it, so we wanted to educate others about it. The challenges we encountered while working on the project was finding good information of the history and revolution of Kpop. If I could do it again, I would create an comparison video of current Kpop idol groups covering the first-generation Kpop idol's song and choreography. Finally, we hope you enjoyed our project and became more familiar with Kpop and develop a better insight of the music genre.

The purpose of this project is to expose students to a different perspective of the African continent. The continent of Africa is usually portrayed as poor. However, this project will shine light on the other side. Additionally, the videos below will show the differences between the traditional and modern music of various cultures. I speak most of the languages spoken in the videos however, it was difficult to explain the videos in an understandable manner, since it is hard to translate in English. However, the main focus is on the imagery in the video and not the lyrics. If I could do it again, I would focus on other parts of Africa such as the east, south, and north because they all differ from one another. Hope you enjoy and learn something new!

I decided to write on Scotland and Ireland music because I have always been fond of Celtic Music. I wrote this article because I feel the most of the times people tend to consider Irish music to be the same as Scottish Music or vice-versa. I made this project to help people differentiate between the two different countries and their differences in Music. More importantly I have also differentiated these countries by the way history impacted their music and also the different instruments they use to create music. I enjoyed differentiating these two countries musical genres and although these countries are neighbors, they are quite different in terms of music. I hope my fellow classmates can also see that and understand the differences I have tried to point out in the music. I had recently visited these two countries and I did not show much interest in differentiating their music. However, if I had a chance I would like to visit Scotland and Ireland again to experience and live the heartfelt music they make. I have added several links in the project which open up videos/ definition of terms which would help a reader to get some insights on what I actually mean. I hope I intrigue my readers and attract them to visit Scotland and Ireland.

Ugandan Music - The Pride of Africa

I created a page on Ugandan music. It consists of Western, Eastern and Central Ugandan Music. Each section gives a description of the types of music and instruments used in the style of music. I chose to do a project on Ugandan Music because I am from Uganda and not many people have heard about the country and especially its style of music. So I decided to make a page to help spread knowledge on Ugandan music. It was not easy making this page because there was not a lot of authentic information available on the internet. I had to verify a few terms and facts with my Ugandan friends. I originally thought of making a youtube video instead of a page. However due to time constraints and me not being present in Uganda, it was not very realistic to create a youtube video. If I have second opportunity, I would love to make a youtube video on the types of music and Ugandan musical instruments so that viewers get a good feel of the musical style. I am still going to try and make a video when I go home for the winter break and will try to share it with everyone. I learnt a lot on Ugandan music while doing more research on it and it was very interesting for me to see how music originated in Uganda and the forms of music that exist in Uganda. I thank professor Alisha for giving me an opportunity to do a project on my own country.

Misogynistic Bollywood Lyrics (Objectifying of women)

Bollywood lyrics and songs is not only a source of entertainment but has a huge part in how women are treated in india. Women are undervalued and objectified by their male counterparts. The graph of sensibility of Bollywood Songs is seen to be sloping negatively day-by-day. Bollywood plays an important role in influencing lives of people. Therefore, it is important for me bring focus on such a crucial topic. One of the major challenges i encountered while working on the project was, translating certain Bollywood Hindi lyrics to English, to help explain the lyrics better. If i get a chance to do a project like this again, i would compare Bollywood's way of treating women to other world cinema's way of treating women in their movies and lyrics. I hope we can learn for this and help spread awareness to stop objectification of women.

Ghazal - Music Of Love

Indian Music has many forms, but not many know about ghazal. Ghazal music may be understood as a poetic expression of both the pain of loss or separation and the beauty of love in spite of that pain, which could be expressed through music. It is one of the oldest forms of music popular in Hindustani and Pakistani music. But there are many people who don’t know the backstory about the old ancient music and the importance which is connected to the Ghazal music. I wanted to bring out the word "ghazal" to different people and diversify, about what ghazal music is all about? Ghazal singing has taken a new turn with a change in style of singing and use of modern instruments and editing software. Which has backlogged ghazal music and tend people to forget the cultural background of traditional music. The most difficult part was to translate into English. Hope you enjoy and learn something about ghazal music.

Seven Hungarian Classical Style Pieces You Must Hear

My project is a list of seven beautiful Hungarian classical pieces and a bit of information about what you hear. I wanted to do it because I love classical music, but most lists out there consist of solely Mozart, Bach, and other world famous composers that have become a household name. Because my family is Hungarian, I wanted to do a list of Hungarian classical pieces. The biggest challenge by far is learning part way through that it is extremely difficult to define what "Hungarian classical music" actually is, because it never held its own form. Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly were really the first two people to attempt to create a signature style for it (myportfolio). As such, it was extremely difficult to find many "Hungarian classical pieces", and to find a diverse group of composers at that. If I were to do this project differently, I would have chosen a different country, as Hungarian classical music is near impossible to define and label. The information I cited above was found from https://myportfolio.ucl.ac.uk/artefact/artefact.php?artefact=154051&view=30483, and any information I wrote in this article was pulled from my own prior knowledge of classical music.

I showed pieces of music to some of my friends and had them draw the women that they would associate with that type of music. I then went on to describe how their drawings were similar to the real life treatment of women in different countries. I used artwork from my friends because they are do not have any background knowledge of these countries or music so they were able to give a more unbiased drawing.
What Makes a Good Wedding Song

This project is an analysis of a list of the top 10 wedding songs produced by the website 538. I really enjoy the 538 website, which utilizes statistics to perform analysis and make conclusions, and when I heard about the final project this top 10 list immediately came to mind. I wanted to perform this analysis in order to see if there are any commonalities among these songs that make them so popular in a celebratory setting. The main challenge I came across was the lack of definite conclusion in my analysis. I originally wanted to be able to list the 3 or 4 essential qualities of a good wedding song, but each song has its own unique characteristics. If I could do the project again I would love to analyze the differences and similarities between the commonalities that I found. For example, I would compare the different drops or different tempo changes in each song to provide deeper analysis. The only sources I used were the 538 ranking and a short section from the American Heart Association. Everything else is my own analysis.
https://medium.com/@noahmorris_67223/what-makes-a-good-wedding-song-dac59290057e

Small Carnivals around the World

This project is about the history and of carnivals and different locations that perform this type of festival. I come from a small country where carnival is an important tradition as it reflects the history and growth of the country. For this project, I wanted to bring to view smaller and less known countries that also participate in the carnival tradition and show that no matter the size, it is an expression of being alive. The main challenge I faced was the lack of information. Most websites just gave a overview the the celebration for tourist, rather than explaining the meaning and traditions behind the performances and designs. If I had the time and the money, i would visit the countries, interview the residents, and participate in one the events to get a better understanding. https://medium.com/@tue97054/small-carnivals-around-the-world-5acc77823aa9

7 Chilean Musicians You Need to Hear

This project is a list of 7 excellent Chilean musicians that are not only popular in Chile, but have strong links to Chilean culture or have changed Chilean music in some way. I wanted to do this project because after studying abroad in Chile for a summer I realized how little is known about the country and its music here in the United States. Additionally, when looking for Chilean musicians online I was only able to find one article that dealt solely with up-and-coming artists, not necessarily artists that have had large contributions to Chilean culture. One challenge I encountered was finding artists with an exclusively Chilean sound. Due to the coup d'etat in Chile in the 1970s, many artists and musicians fled and lived in exile. This led to other cultures heavily influencing Chilean art making it difficult to exclusively define Chilean music. If I were to do this project over again, rather than simply looking at different Chilean musicians, I would more heavily research the ways that other cultures influenced Chilean music and art during Pinochet's regime, and how these cultures continue to shape the country.

Gender Stereotypes in Music

This project discusses the stereotypes against men and women in the music industry. I chose to focus on gender stereotypes because I feel that despite many steps that have been taken to removing stereotypes and breaking the separation of genders, there are many more steps that need to be taken. By creating this blog, the problems that need to be solved are spread to not only scholars and educators, but also millennials and children who use social media, therefore this issue can be given more attention. While creating this blog, I faced challenges of finding statistics and strong facts on the subject because it has not gained enough focus. If I were to do this project over again, I would find more information about the subjects, and find more examples of stereotypes against men and women in music.

The Importance of Integrating the Arts

This blog is about the importance of incorporating the arts, music, visual arts, dance, and theater into teachers lessons plans. This blog will explain the benefits the arts has on teachers and students as well as providing lessons plans to show how the arts can be integrated into lesson plans while still meetings the content standards. As an education major and actually having a class called Integrating the Arts this semester, I felt this is such an important topic to address for future educators because the arts really has so many benefits not only for students but for teachers as well. A few challenges I faced while working on this project was trying to put my own twist on lesson plans I found on Pinterest to enhance the arts integration. Although Pinterest is amazing, I feel it is always important to give your spin on a lesson. Another challenge was really working with the websites like medium and weebly and figuring out how to use them. What I would do differently is maybe provide more examples of arts integration in basic lessons plans not so much in a thematically unit to show how simple it really is to do so. Hope you guys enjoy my blog and also just wanted to let you know some of these lessons are from Pinterest and even though I tried to make it into my own, some of it is similar.

Udan Mess

My goal with this composition was to recreate a Javanese gamelan piece using only the western instruments at my disposal. It is modeled the ending piece of a typical gamelan called a Burbaran. While the melody itself was composed personally in the Indonesian 7-note pelog scale, the structure itself is based on the piece "Udan Mas." While a traditional gamelan piece is played at once by an ensemble, I had only myself and digital multi-tracking to rely on. Because of this, one may notice a more disjointed feel because I had no other live musicians to play along with and reference. Thus, the title: "Udan Mess."

Using my own instruments, I was able to simulate the three layers of a Javanese piece. The Balungun, or core melody, was played by a set of toy bells and doubled with an acoustic guitar. The kembangan, an improvisational layer on the core melody, was double-tracked by a mandolin. The colotomic structure was created by a western tom drum and a snare drum with the snares turned off. Additionally, cymbal bells were used to flesh out the colotomic structure, with the hi-hat, crash, and ride cymbal bells simulating the ketuk, kempul, and kenong sounds, respectively.

I chose this project as I believed it would be a practical application of my skills as a songwriter and engineer. I found the simple melody and odd scale of gamelan music particularly attractive, and thought writing a piece in that style would be an interesting challenge.

While writing the piece itself was fairly easy, playing it all the way through proved to be a challenge. It's very easy to get lost in the repetition and forget the structure, especially because there's really only two different parts. There aren't any clues along the way to remind you where you are, you simply need to keep a close count in your head. Keeping everything together and on time was also difficult, as the rhythm is simple and fairly slow.

If could I do the project over, I would like to record even more layers, so as to make the piece sound really big, like a real gamelan ensemble was playing it in front of the listener.

This project is a review on a contemporary blues album. I personally feel as if the blues is becoming a dying genre and not many artists today are recording blues albums. The blues is one of my favorite genres of music, and this album is the reason why I decided to pick up the guitar. Some challenges I faced while working on this project were deciding which aspects of the album I wanted to discuss. Initially, I was torn between reviewing every song on the album individually or just reviewing the album in its entirety while pointing out a few specific songs as examples. If I could go back, something I would do differently would be to provide a link to one of the songs at the end of the review so that viewers could easily access the song and get a feel for what the rest of the album sounds like. Before you grade my work, I want to say that this is one of my favorite albums of all time, and you should definitely give it a listen if you have time.

Top 10 Warm-Up Songs

Our project is a list of 10 songs that we believe are some of the best songs to warm-up and workout to. We justify why we believe these songs are the best in our excerpt below the music videos.

We decided to do this idea since we are both sport-related majors: Gina is Kinesiology and Alexa is Sports Management. We also play on Temple’s Club Field Hockey team together, so we share a common love for sports. We tried to find an interesting way that would appeal to not only us, but our classmates (maybe even our professor), in a way that involved both of our fields of study. Working out and participating in sports is something that we both enjoy and wanted to incorporate when browsing ideas for the project.

Challenges that we encountered include finding clean (non-explicit) songs that we believe help us get motivated. Most hyped-up songs that are reliable for setting an energizing mood involve foul language. Also, it was challenging to not be repetitive while describing why we believe the songs should be used to warm up to. Most of the songs had similar characteristics to one another.

If we were to do this again, something we would do differently is work harder to find cleaner songs, as well as songs that apply to everyone’s musical preferences. It is difficult to make a playlist for the common person if everyone enjoys different types of music.

For Professor N. :Gina did numbers 1-5 and Alexa did numbers 6-10 on the playlist.

https://medium.com/@tuf41132/top-10-warm-up-songs-4395b08b92ad

Sex Sells; Is Exposure as Prevalent in Other Cultures' Pop Music as in the U.S.?

This project explored the popular music in other cultures we covered in this class to compare it to how exposed sexual content is in comparison to in U.S. popular music. I thought this was an interesting topic to explore because I believe exposure in the popular music genre is prone to exposing women and patenting sex in order to attract an audience. I wanted to see how prevalent this was in other top 10 music songs in cultures such as Japanese, African, and Indian cultures. I found struggles in trying to find top songs in particular regions that were not influenced by American culture; I wanted it to be very specific to the region but language barriers and bias from certain websites made it hard to find popular music in some instances. If I could do this project again I would have maybe tried doing this project with a partner to get more input.

I wanted to analyze why the film works so well, even for people who are not typically fans of musicals. My biggest challenge on making this project was how time-consuming the video editing was. If I had the chance to do the video again, (1) I probably would have gotten another person to do the voice-over because my voice is very monotone, and (2) I would have made the video shorter.
The Ten Most Powerful Paul Simon Song Lyrics You Need To Hear

Hey Everyone!
My project is a list of the 10 most powerful (and by that I mean some compromise of emotional, significant, and poetic) lyrics written by the songwriter Paul Simon, both during his duo with Art Garfunkel and his solo career. I wanted to do this because I am a gigantic Paul Simon fan, and I feel like his solo work as well as some of Simon and Garfunkel's more obscure work is lost in the shuffle and now well known, or appreciated. The major challenges when doing this project were trying to talk about the subject in a more historical or lyrical way, rather than an emotional list about how much I like the songs. I tried to just tell the story and explain a bit of the history without interjecting too much of how much I like the songs. If I could do it again, I would have spent more time listing and ordering the songs, and I would have included more of Simon's newest material. As the list is, I generally agree with the order, although it could use a little work. I don't know Simon's work after ~1990 as well, so it isn't included in the listing. There really isn't anything to know, although I'm sorry I haven't learned how to write a short article yet. Enjoy!

The reason I wanted to do this project is because I found out about a rap group called the Flatbush Zombies and when I listened to their lyrics I assumed that a lot of people might have a problem what they are saying. That got me thinking about why we think any song is socially acceptable and I wanted to explore that idea. The main challenge I encountered was that most of the articles already written about this topic are overall talking negatively about songs about drugs and sex, not taking an unbiased view. If I had to do it differently I would probably conduct a survey to find out what people thought about this topic on Temple's campus

My project explains the connection between songs and album cover art and why it is important. I analyzed four culturally different songs and album covers to get the reader to find relations between the two. I also included my own drawing of what an album cover might look like based on the song. I wanted to do this project because I love to draw and listen to music. From my experience, artist’s every stroke and photographer’s every photo manipulation is intentional to portray a bigger theme. Although there are articles about how album art depicts author’s lives, there are not many that find connections to art and song patterns. The challenges I encountered while working on this project was finding album covers that can be representative of different countries. If I were to do this project differently, I would add more songs from each album to analyze for the reader to find connections between the art and each song.
https://medium.com/@linguyen919/how-do-musicians-album-art-reflect-song-patterns-d56e9fe31b83

5 Benefits Of Listening To Classical Music

Hey everyone :)

Since I am a Neuroscience major for this project I wanted to shift the focus on our brain/mind and music. And how the power of music affects memory and learning also our health especially Mozart's music and baroque music, with a 60 beats per minute beat pattern, activates the left and right brain. The simultaneous left and right brain action maximizes learning and retention of information as well as heals the mind and body. I did this project because I wanted everyone to know the power classical music has on the brain. Lucky, I did not encounter many difficulties doing this project other than learn more interesting studies on our brain with Mozart's music. If I could do this again I would conduct an experiment with college students to find out if listening to classical music while studying for finals can help recalling the materials during finals. Hope you will find my post useful to you someday :)

For my project, I discussed and reviewed what makes scary music scary and how music can set a certain mood for any movie but in particular, horror movies. I focused on two popular and iconic films; Psycho and Jaws. I wanted to do my project on this for the sole reason because I am a huge fan of horror movies, and have always been interested in the unique sounds played in different horror film scenes. My biggest challenge would of been having to narrow down my favorite horror films. If I could do this project again, next time I would incorporate more horror films as well as drama, war, and adventure genres and compare them all, considering non linear sounds are not only in the horror genre.

I am an art history major at the Tyler school of art and specialize in ancient pieces of art. It is difficult to find examples of what instruments in each civilization would have sounded like as well as popular compositions since many have been lost or never recorded. I am extremely passionate about art history and hope I can teach you one or two things about music in the ancient world. If I could, I could go on and on and talk about pieces all throughout history.

One day after class I went home and started playing bass and realized I was droning notes on the bass. I knew what droning was before but seeing it used in a different cultures music gave me some ideas of my own for my music. It made me think of ways I can use these musical ideas while using a guitar and a bass. George Harrison went to India to practice the sitar to infuse classical Indian music on the Beatles Sargent Pepper album. I thought of that when I was composing this melody with my bass. I wanted the song to be relaxing and make the listener feel like there are no worries in the world. To bring them to the sense of nirvana, almost to a state of meditation. So with the link below you can check out how this class influenced my music.

We talked about how different countries music has an influence their culture and for some cultures their every day life. Not only was this class interesting and I learned a lot about other countries and their music, this class has brought an influence over my own musical writings. The first time that I realized this class was having an influence on my muisc was when we covered the Middle Eastern and Indian section. I did not find any challenges while doing this final project because the song came to me randomly one day.

Ranking the Songs That Make Bollywood’s Biggest Blockbuster Movie ‘Dangal’

This project is the ranking of all the songs in the Bollywood movie "Dangal," the highest grossing Bollywood in history, in order, based on certain criteria. I wanted to do it to analyze why each of the songs made the movie such a success, considering how big of a roll music has in Bollywood films. Challenges included finding english translations for the song, as well as finding information on the songs in regards to the movie. If I could do something different, I would have taken notes of the music and what I felt while I watched the movie, rather than after-the-fact. While there were not many songs compared to other Bollywood films, the ones that were present were powerful and effective, and the critiques made were reaching at times, just for the sake of being able to order the songs. The link will take you to the publication, and from there click on the story with a title to read the whole article.

Some of the challenges I encounter was ranking the topics from 1-10 because evidently they were all equally important and ultimately fighting the same cause. In the future, I would like to see modern day music headed in the right direction so that I can add more powerful and influential music to my list. I hope you all enjoy this listicle and please read the lyrics and watch the videos carefully. Thank you.

The project I created is an Adobe Spark blog post explaining how music is used for government propaganda in North Korea. I was interested in this topic because I wanted to analyze North Korea’s strong censorship through the lens of music. I have always been interested in North Korea and was excited to be able to apply ideas and concepts learned this semester in “World Musics”. I thought I would be able to find several uses for music in North Korea. After doing research, I realized that through the public eye, music is only able to be used if it does not speak out against North Korea’s Communist government. To combat this challenge, I focused my research on the several ways North Korea uses music to promote its Communist beliefs. If I were to do the project again, I would try analyze individual propaganda songs more in depth. Thank you for reading my work and I hope you can learn something new!

https://spark.adobe.com/page/vVxSBlMVjlXBl/

I really wanted to write this because I believe more people should know of this hidden gem. One of the reasons I wanted to do this topic was because often times, people in America only listen to music from this country and do not branch out to find new music. Many of the artists that I listen to and think are talented are from Canada but they do not get as much exposure.Since I'm a fan of this music, it was easy for me to make this list and I did not run into any challenges. If I could do it again, I would have liked to go more in depth on each artist. Hopefully, by creating this list, I can introduce people to music they would have never listened to before.

The Effects of Music Therapy

My project is a narrated video about how music therapy can be effective for someone under many different circumstances. I was inspired to research this topic after I saw a video of a boy with a stutter that spoke almost perfectly without a stutter while listening to music. I thought it was amazing how music could aid him in that way. The main challenge I faced was picking the most important facts so that I didn't talk too much but still included everything necessary to understand a concept. If I did this project again, I would probably write a blog post to include more information; however, I think this is a somewhat more entertaining alternative.

**If you want to see the touching video of the boy with a stutter here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFXl27z5sIE

Top 10 Reggae Artists of My Generation

My project dives a bit into the background of Reggae music, and focuses on the Reggae influences my self and many people my age had growing up. With any music list, I didn't want to get too personal with who I liked because I understand that reggae music is not a genre indulged in by everyone, and like anything else a taste is somewhat required to appreciate certain sounds and songs. So this list is composed of those have not only influenced me but the culture greatly, these are sounds and names you can not escape. If I was to do this project once more I would probably focus my top 10 list a bit better, so that my selection does not range from so many different angles. Anyways, I enjoyed the assignment, and the ability to brush up on my reggae history and even learn a few things I didn't know before. Hope you all enjoy !

https://www.buzzfeed.com/brendonggg/top-10-reggae-artist-to-know-for-the-modern-dance-39bab?utm_term=.qvqQ2xQ46#.gpGv0gv4x

How Women Are Portrayed Through Music

My project is about how women are sexualized in music videos to generate more views and ultimately creating more income. I was inspired by the Brazilian Samba dancers that we discussed in class as well as the performance I saw at the Brazilian Day Festival. I wanted to do this topic to bring attention to this issue and how it is not necessary in order to be a successful artist.
