Ernest Rutherford wanted to further research atoms while studying effects from X-rays on gases, so he shot small, positively charged alpha particles at a gold foil sheet and although most particles passed through the sheet, some bounced away from it. So he concluded and illustrated that the atom was a largely empty space with a few electrons and at the center was concentrated mass which he named the nucleus. As many alpha particles passed through the atom's empty space, some bounced from the nucleus at the center.
