As not all of us may have adequate exposure to the cultural elements that occur in the book (as Grace Lin shared in the epilogue, the book is culled from what she had discovered in her various trips to the East to acquaint herself with her cultural heritage), this is a list of resources to help us bridge gaps in our knowledge. Please note that readers are not expected to know these all references in‐depth. Though participants may be interested in some of these elements for their own sake, for the Reading Circle, it is more important to understand how these elements and motifs have been used in the text, and evaluate the effectiveness of the use.
