As employees are the ones carrying out day-to-day operations and can often provide meaningful insight.

In reading one this piece of information just makes sense because communication involving two people where they both listen and both express their ideas just works. This compared to a one way traffic flow of communication just is not going to be as efficient, the two way communication system is done more efficient, gets the employee more involved and feels more like a community.
In reading two corporate speak from what I know is boring work talk but of course needs to have it's places, but also to make an employee feel more involved when you talk to them more as a friend and less as someone you work with. Using a friendly tone and smile on your face can definitely come off as more friendly rather than shaking ends per say, and using less business words like work talk and more everyday language like how you would talk to a friends can make an impact on an employee to make them feel more close to the company.

As it is said just explaining and putting forward the aims and objectives won't help in achieving the goals, to persuade employees to work rightly towards the goal leaders need to foster empathy for organizational challenges. Thus, it was an “ah-ha” moment as it highlights the three keys to leadership communication in present: being a community developer, acting as navigator, and becoming renewal champions.

The information that was most captivating to me was the basic evolution of steps in business leadership communication. I think as human beings evolve in business there are more and more ways to lose or captivate people's attention. The first reading and the first step highlight the importance of focusing on a community. In a workplace, you need to have trust and open communication to function as a well-operating business. Having a tight-knit community is the first step into offering this.
The second reading when they focus on using plain speak instead of corporate-speak caught my attention because I think it ties in with the whole community concept. When in a workplace environment you want to feel as though talking to co-workers or even management can be a natural occurrence. Having more open and plain speech with your fellow employees really provides the opportunity to communicate problems or offer clarification.

I think this information about creating a community hit me as most important when I realized that most people in a workplace want to feel like they are one unit. When thinking about a work environment that doesn't have this union, there may seem to be a lack of understanding. When a workplace does have a community where you can work closely, things happen to run smoothly.
In the second reading, avoiding corporate speech seemed more important to me because speaking more freely within your organization provides you the ability to share your work opinions without worrying about overstepping. That being said there is a line where things become inappropriate or not workplace conversation. These should be avoided and not be considered "flat speech".

I feel this idea is not stressed nor mentioned nearly enough in many workplaces, as the Leaders often forget their role as a navigator, and only have their mind set on achieving one goal.

From the second reading, quite simply the section that stood out to me was 'fun'.

I think this information was important because having a leader be a navigator is crucial for success. In a business sense, it is successful for communication, and often maximizing efficiency, and in turn profits. Leaders, often people in a managerial role, have a lot to handle, and I think the role of navigator needs to be a priority. It makes me think about my work experiences, and how I have had superiors who seem to forget this, and then I had superiors who are fully invested in 'navigating' their workers to success.

The 'fun' portion for me was a huge "ah-ha" moment for me. Mainly because of how pleasantly surprised I was to see it. To begin with, it is an underrated and underappreciated part of communication. But, I certainly did not expect it to see it in an official document from the Harvard School of Business. This information, is so important for success. When people are having fun, not too much fun, but the right amount of fun, mental health is better, and performance in turn is usually better.

1) An idea that stood out to me was the third point of “commit to continual renewal.” Specifically, the article mentioned how a CEO knew almost 5,000 employees’ names. I believe that knowing something as simple as a name assists in creating value within the workforce because it demonstrates a personal connection. Without this connection, the CEO can lose work-based value amongst employees. Thus, leading to the possible creation of an unhealthy and unproductive work environment.

2) The most important idea from the second article is that without communication even the most initiative ideas can fail. To avoid possible failure perspective should be considered to create engaging communication, the recipient’s point of view.

The one idea that captivated my thinking was steer a steady course in Article 1. I found it very interesting that they broke the idea into a 3 step process: first, a leader needs to grab everyone's attention, then set a clear direction and then persuade employees to act. I think this is very important because it stresses the need to create a very clear strategy for your business. In the second article, I thought it was very important to tell stories as it helps people relate and understand personally the message you are trying to deliver. If people are able to relate and understand and personalize the message from the story, then they may be more likely to agree and accept your message.

Reading 1: In the first reading the information about employees expressing themselves on their values and opinions has captured my attention as something important at St. Louis. I find this piece of information important since it's common knowledge to treat others the way you want to be treated, and I find it commendable that this company follows this moral. This piece of information also shows the reader the consequences when this moral is taken for granted by the authors Mai and Akerson writing about the CEO who wrote a threatening memo to managers. This memo ended up receiving coverage by the New York Times.

Reading 2: In the second reading the information about fun caught my attention. I find it interesting how people still find fun the best learning practice even if they are in a professional job. I would think that professionals would find a different learning tactic as they grew older through different experiences such as researching information or learning through higher position staff. This information leads me to believe that the saying “do a job that you enjoy everyday” is accurate because if a person enjoys their daily job, that means they are having fun, which in turn would lead to them learning the most in the field they are in.

Reading 1: I think this information is important as it shows employees the value of speaking your mind when talking to managers, so that the company can improve moving forward. Employees are the main unit to a company and without them the business cannot function, so by giving their opinions they could steer the business into a great environment for employees to work in. This was an "ah-ha" moment since employees think that they generally have no say in their job since they don't have the job position of a manager. This is wrong since employees cause everything to be set in motion so if something is wrong, they should inform the managers or CEO of this information. This also shows “what happens in the workplace, doesn't stay in the workplace”, just like that mean CEO email. If there is something very wrong in the work environment, employees should not stay silent, but rather speak up and try to get help from external sources.

Reading 2: I think this information is important since it shows the reader that fun is basically the motivation most employees use to work. If employees are doing a fun task or having fun with the task, they will learn more and probably learn faster as compared to someone just doing the task that they find boring since their boss told them too. This was an "ah-ha" moment since it shows that adults still want to do fun things, just because they are grown with professional jobs doesn't mean that they don't want to have fun. I also feel it opens the doors to many options for CEOs and managers since they can try to teach employees through different means. By increasing employee morale, they can possibly learn new skills, which overall improves the business.

Reading 1: This statement was really an aha moment for me since typically when you think of the term “leader”, a good communicator and someone who can effectively express their thoughts and opinions comes to mind. However, it is equally important that a leader listens to their employees and coworkers since their thoughts are just as valid and should be given equal consideration. This will ultimately be the foundation for a trusting and cohesive work community.

Reading 2: This information is very important to note since it can make or break the initiative. Not enough companies put the emphasis on how the messages are communicated to employees. The communication has to be enthusiastic and creative so the ones receiving the information can reciprocate that same energy that the company wants. If managers are being lackadaisical, it shows employees they don’t care and they won’t want to put in the extra effort for managers who won’t take the time to communicate messages properly.

As a strive for career paths in management when i get older, it is now understood that simply telling your co-workers your goals and your company's goals doesn't make them their goals as well. But explaining them in a way that makes it sound exciting and like they are a key contributing factor to the success of the company, it will make them work harder to achieve these goals alongside you.

Reading Two: From a personal perspective i resonated with this paragraph from the reading. Instead of focusing on how everyone else in the past has managed their business and how they have managed to reach success, I have to be innovative and come up with some original ideas to stand out from every other business owner.

Reading One: This information was an "ah-ha" moment for me because it displayed a clear blue print to a proper innovative style of leadership. It is evident that for a company to generate a healthy culture as well as success there needs to be direction, strong communication and all employees must buy-in. When I say "buy-in" I am referring to all the employees working towards a common goal as a whole to benefit the company. This three step process is a perfect guide for a leader to create a strong culture in the work place. Once this process is implemented properly with strong direction and communication by the leader, then the employees will start to buy-in. Growth and success within the company will start to become evident as more and more employees start to work towards the common of the company.

Reading Two: The information I got from this reading was very important because it explains the importance and power of communication. When communicating an idea to someone or a group of individuals it is crucial that their attention is undivided and you have them hooked. If you are unsuccessful at this, you may as well be speaking a different language... because your audience either is not listening or just not absorbing any information being projected. To hook your audience and create enthusiasm within the group it is imperative to be innovative and exciting in how you deliver the information. Communicating ideas in a way that your audience finds exciting will entice them and essentially persuade them to "buy-in" to your idea.

I initially associated debate in a workplace with a negative conflict-based thing, yet the reading explaining the idea of debate allowing employees to feel that they can speak up and be heard captivated and changed my thinking.

Reading 2 - The piece of information that captured my attention was how the reading stated that “Fun is not the “f” word”. A workplace environment is typically seen as a place to be professional and serious, so reading that people learn better when they’re having fun and that it should be encouraged in a workplace caught my attention.

In the article “Three Keys to Leadership Communication Today”, the idea that was most captivating to me was that leaders should be navigators in times of transition or when the business is faced with a challenge. While it is a given that leaders should be directing during these times, the article emphasized on the idea of fostering empathy for organizational challenges. While to navigate a leader should set a clear direction for their employees and persuade them to act, a good leader also needs to go beyond explaining company objectives and have a meaningful conversation with their employees about the reasons for these objectives and listen to the employees’ responses while encouraging them to propose ideas. A leader should always be eager to hear what their employees have to say in times of transition while navigating.

I believe this information was important because it forces you to see that being an effective leader has more to do with the environment you create for your employees rather than how you will dictate your business. While making decisions and leading is important, it is equally important to ensure you are fostering a community. As said in the article, “a group can’t be a community without a two-way flow of communication, leaders need to cultivate their listening skills”. Often leaders forget that listening to their employees is equally as important as directing.

Knowing that everything I communicate will be scrutinized I will be cautious in the way I address colleagues and the level of professionalism I maintain along with having a connection with colleagues individually. In section of the article that this idea was addressed, an example of a CEO who had sent out a threatening email to managers was presented to show that though this email started off as confidential, it reached Yahoo, ultimately painting a poor picture of the management of that company.

One piece of information that captivated my thinking was the advice to provoke questions and conversation. Here the author says that while unconventional, graphics, formats, and language may upset traditionalists, this is okay as the goal should be to start a conversation and gain attention from the public eye. Furthermore, that creating a “buzz” regardless is it is negative, is still better than “playing it safe”. I found this idea interesting because of the fact that it states that even bad coverage is still coverage and has its benefits to the organization.
