In 2005, Sri Swami Vishwananda founded the spiritual order ‘Bhakti Marga’, whose main ashram, Shree Peetha Nilaya, is based in Germany. In 2015, he became the first spiritual leader based in Europe to receive the Mahamandaleshwar title.

The Mahamandaleshwar title represents spiritual leadership and is one of the most prestigious honors to be awarded to a spiritual leader. People with this designation are considered to be guardians of the Hindu faith. The great ancient guru, Adi Shankaracharya created this post sometime in the ninth century to protect Hindu traditions from religious threat.

The Mahamandaleshwar ceremony took place during the 2015 Kumbh Mela festival in Nashik, India.
