What should science look like in elementary classrooms? by Kelsey

You might think about . . .

• Childhood experiences with science (formal/informal)
• Experiences with children in science settings (formal/informal)
• What works? What doesn’t work? Why? For whom?
• What should we prioritize?
• What beliefs about children, science and the purpose of education underlie
your ideas?
How do the readings inform your ideas?

Science in the classroom should emphasize curiosity and how to ask good questions. STEM requires the ability to ask questions to make new discoveries, so there should not be such a focus on memorization of facts. Wonderment can be a student's motivation to learn these subjects.

ADHD) to participate their outside-the-box thinking

- Many teachers probably want to emphasize inquiry over mastery in science, but either don't know how to or feel as though they are unable to (due to curriculum expectations, standards, assessment, convenience, etc.)
- Class sizes and resources can also have a huge impact on a teacher's ability to allow for more free exploration in the classroom
- How does assessment look when there is no specific set learning outcome?
- It might be easier to treat the curriculum as more of a guideline and less of a strict list of expectations that all HAVE to be fully covered
