As working dogs, they were kept as hunters and guardians, as well as herders and pets.(source 3) 
discussion... Back then pit bulls were not given a bad reputation. To the people they were truly "respected" and was not given any hatred towards them. They were protective in a good way. They watched over their own people and they were even "kept" as "pets." They are pets to some people these days, but many people don't like the idea of having them as pets.

Furthermore, because pitbulls used to be a symbol of American pride they have amazing characteristics.

     Discussion: Based on what I read, not all pit bulls are as vicious as the media portrays them. This pit bull had saved his whole platoon. Pit bulls can protect.
