The "the" in Spanish for certain nouns is dependant upon the last letter within the word. For example, if the word ends with a consonant or o, the object is masculine, which means there is an "en". With feminine it ends with a, giving it a "la". plural happens when the word ends with an s, masculine is los and feminine is las. There are exceptions to these rulers like "mapa" and "sacapuntas".

Again, the ending of the word can determine the gender of the noun. For example, "boligrafo" is masculine while "puerta" is feminine. Plural words are usually determined by the fact that . they end with s. The exceptions are words like "estudiante", "sacapuntas" and "lapiz".

The difference between formal and informal is minor but important. For example, when asking how are you it's just esta instead of estad. All tus are replaced with usted and te is replaced with se. When asking ones name, it must be llama not llamas.
