Where It Started

Humans have had OCD for a very long time but it was finally noticed a few hundred years ago. Noticing the OCD was not as good as it sounds. Back then, people related OCD with spiritual thoughts and cared about destroying thoughts without paying attentions to its effect on the patient's mind. Years later, when the talk therapy became the new standard solution to OCD, it resulted in making he symptoms worse. Later, exposure therapy became the solution for OCD. It focused on eliminating the symptoms but it failed to get rid of the obsessive thoughts, so it didn't always have positive results. Today, therapists let their patients understand how OCD works and how it controls their thoughts and try to eliminate both the obsession and the compulsive actions. The new surgical methods are also an easy way for patients to permanently get rid of OCD.

No one really knows for sure what the cause of OCD is but scientists think that genetics, brain structure and functioning, and environment effect it. Research showed that people who have siblings with OCD are at a higher chance of developing OCD themselves. It has been seen that a trauma can also trigger OCD.

Is There A Cure?

There is a cure. There are therapeutic, medical, and surgical methods that can stop OCD from taking over patient's minds. Medications are not always the same for every OCD patient. Doctors usually try different Antidepressants before assigning the one that controls OCD with as little damage to the patient as possible. Some of the antidepressants may be: Sertraline, Fluoxetine, Fluvoxamine, Paroxetine, or Clomipramine. The Thereputical method involves the patients watching things or actions that would usually trigger their OCD, without being able to react to it. If the medications and the therapy doesn't work, the patients might want to get a surgery where a device, that sends out electrical shocks, is implanted into the patients brain to control the neurological activities of the brain. Unlike most brain surgeries, this surgery is reversible.

Teens are effected by OCD the most. The symptoms usually appear by the age of 14 but are not noticed by the late teens. OCD can be very overwhelming and adds a lot of anxiety to youth's dad to day life so it is best to see a doctor as soon as we think we have OCD. It is also important to educate the parents because they are the ones who can help the most if they know how to help.

To diagnose a patient, doctors do physical, phycological, and lab tests. Doctors look to see if the obsessive and compulsive actions of the patient makes it hard for to finish their day actions.
