Page 53 of the text states, "Students do not mind failing; what they do not like is being punished for failure when they try." Schlechty says that we cannot protect them from failure, but we can respect their effort. When we think about adverse consequences, we tend to focus on teacher consequences, but we have to protect them from their peers and themselves.
In the protection narrative, we are told that often times are systems are designed around extrinsic rewards and punishments; however, that is the behavior of a bureaucracy. If we are to develop into a learning organization, how do we develop a system that protects the students and the teachers from adverse effects?

Students should be provided the opportunity to share what they know over time so that they can develop and share a true understanding of content knowledge. Teachers should work to establish a classroom where students share knowledge without fear of failure. The way we speak with and react to students can have an impact on their comfort level in the classroom. Students need to be able to work and communicate inside and outside of the classroom without fear of failure or embarrassment from peers and teachers.
