Sparta was a strong warrior state and spent much of their reign battling in war. Woman were highly praised as the mothers of warriors. Their most important and worshipped role within the society was child birth and rearing. It was considered their responsibility to produce strong warriors. Women’s physical strength was believed to be extremely important (equal to men) and they were trained in gymnastics and other physical tasks as this was thought to help them produce strong warriors and assist them to bare the pain of labour.

In order to achieve the best for the state Spartan’s believed that the physical health of their men and women was extremely important. Young infants were put to an initial test in order to determine if they would live or die. Infants who were believed not to be strong enough were left to die often in the wild or in the mountains.

Both Spartan girls and boys would live with their parents until around the age of six or seven and then they were required to attend a school. Although girls would still live, sleep and exercise in the own living quarters/ space the idea of educating girls was something quite unique about Sparta. Girls were taught subjects such as pottery, history, drama, reading, writing, music and art. Just like boys Spartan girls were required to stay physically fit and were trained in running, fighting, wrestling, throwing discus & javelin and gymnastics. Spartan girls like their brothers swam and exercised naked and were able to do this publicly (another rarity about Sparta) as many women in Ancient Greece were not seen in public at all.

When spartan girls reached the age of 18 they were required to take a test in order to become a citizen of Sparta. This test was thought to be a test of the girls physical and mental strength. A girl who did not pass this test would be marked as middle class which Spartans would refer to as perioikos.

Unlike many other Greek cultures at the time, Spartan women married slightly later in their lives (during their late teens to early twenties). While it is thought that marriages were somewhat arranged for the couple, women were believed to have a say. The mother of the bride had a role in the choosing of her daughter’s groom.

The Spartan marriage ceremony is known as the capture marriage. The bride’s maid or maid of the bride would capture her, shave her head and dress her in men’s clothing. The groom would arrive, and they would begin a secret marriage. The couple did not live together until the man reached the age of thirty. This was considered to strengthen the relationship and create a sense of desire to be together. During this time woman ran the family home (estate).
