Kid's Respond to Child Hunger

By: SoulPancake

Synopsis: Kids are interviewed with questions such as their favorite food, least favorite food, what do you do when someone gives you food that you do not like and then they explain that 1 out of every 5 kids do not have enough to eat in the United States. The kids express how they feel about this statement and then say what they can do to help stop hunger.

Developing Schema: To develop schema, I would play this video for the students and stop throughout the video so that they can respond to the questions that are being asked in the video. Then I would have the students express their feelings once finding out that 1 in 5 kids do not have enough to eat. Once the video is completed, I would have the students discuss as a whole group various ways we could help end childhood hunger then I would have the students do a writing activity about how they could help end hunger.

By: Maribeth Boelts

Synopsis: Jeremy sees everyone at school wearing black hot top shoes and wants them. He tells his grandma that he wants the shoes but she explains to him that "the shoes are a want" and that they cannot afford a want. At school, Jeremy's shoe were coming apart so the guidance counselor gives him new ones. However, the kids in his class were mean about the shoes except one student, Antonio.

Developing Schema: After reading this book to the students, I would discuss what needs and wants are. There is a difference between the two, needs are items that you need for basic survival like food, water, shelter, clothing. Wants are anything other than food, water, shelter, and clothing. After this discussion I would have the students go through magazines and cut out items that are needs and wants and make a collage of it. Then the students will then present their collage to their classmates.

By: Eve Bunting

Synopsis: Callie's family has to sell their home and move into a small apartment. The family has a yard sale to sell all of their items because they need the money. Callie is having a hard time letting go of her things and saying goodbye to her friends and home. She realizes that in the end as long as she is with her family, she is going to be okay.

Developing Schema: After reading this book, I would want to have a discussion about their feeling towards the book and how they think Callie is feeling throughout the process of leaving behind important items to her. I would also explain that families can have struggles which can cause changes in a person's household. The students will then write a squeal to the book about Callie living in the new apartment with her family.

By: Children's Defense Fund

Synopsis: The video interviews children who faced childhood poverty. Each child tells their story of what they had to endure from limited food, to lack of clothing, where they slept, the conditions of their housing, and moving frequently.

Developing Schema: After watching the video, I would have the students reflect on the past couple of days of learning about childhood poverty and reflect on these stories of these children. The students and I will then develop a plan for how we can help end childhood poverty. An example of something we could do is have a food drive.
