Mingle Puzzle Analysis

I will be trying this out as an opener for HS Art History. We'll be starting our Ancient Egypt unit soon, so we'll see how this goes! I love this idea and see it working for all classes I teach MS-HS. I created a response form that can be utilized throughout diverse themes and classes. I can edit / add specific questions if needed. I chose to use paper copies instead of google form options, just to keep kids engaged as they are viewing the tangible artwork. I can see this working well via google form if students are independently responding. I can't wait to try this!

I chose the above image because it has a nice combination of imagery that I'll be covering. It will be a great tool to help students look deeper into each section of art and try to connect with the intention of the artist and the symbolic simplicity of the time.

I created a presentation to introduce this concept to students, where we role-play as detectives searching for clues in our artwork puzzle. I introduce tools like VTS, five senses, sketching, compare and contrast, and perspective-taking or role-playing—just like the tools an art detective would have in their toolbox for investigation! I found an online puzzle generator in hopes to complete the activity as an entire community for an introduction. Once my students have mastered the idea, I would break it down to smaller groups.

Here is a link to the entire presentation

I kept the questions pretty simple with visual thinking strategies and searching for Elements of Art to help students break down what they are seeing.

Each year, I create a bracket board inspired by March Madness for art. This bracket is displayed in the hallway, allowing the entire school to participate in voting for a winner. After comparing and contrasting, we select a final winner. I’ve also designed a worksheet specifically for the upper grades (3-5) to enhance their engagement in the process (you can find that at the end of the presentation) . I added a video on how to compare and contrast in art class to the presentation.

My students will visit the Iroquois museum (virtually) and see many of the handcrafted pieced by this great Nation; pieces that are such a big part of the history of New York State. Student will learn the origins of the Iroquois creation story by studying the art. They will also learn about the rich history of the hand crafted wampum beads. There is so much to see and learn about the Haudenosaunee people through their art and culture.

We first I would show a video on Monet paintings. Then we can have the students list the different colors in the paintings, what they see like (background, people, nature). Then the students can list what is the same. I created it on a google slide so the students can type it into the boxes.

That was when I discovered Edward Hopper, and have always wanted to incorporate his work into my lessons. At the HS & MS level relationships always seem to be a hot topic, maybe looking at an artists point of view could be helpful to some students, which is why I decided to use the two images for this assignment.

Thank you for this idea! I think this will be a great way for students to see connections between artists, time periods, styles and backgrounds. This is also a great way to show evolution of ideas and techniques, as we all learn from each other. This particular comparison duo is a current artist; Bisa Butler who primarily works in textiles and the ever famous Gustav Klimt. I'll use this in either 8th grade art or Studio Art in the HS. This would be a great formative assessment or just a method for students to respond to art and come up with their own interpretations of how art is fluid and expressive throughout generations.

This unit emphasizes the importance of choice-based learning, meeting a key standard by encouraging students to make intentional decisions about their materials. Students select an animal and choose two mediums they're familiar with to bring their ideas to life. This approach not only reinforces their understanding of various materials but also empowers them to express creativity through thoughtful selection and combination of techniques.

I created this virtual field trip for my elementary ENL students. I would introduce the idea of metafiction by sharing Harold and the Purple Crayon. After reviewing the exhibit at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, students would select one of the pictures and complete a response sheet. They would then read the entire book that included the artwork they studied. This activity would be a fun opportunity to integrate art appreciation with reading, writing, listening and speaking skills for my English learners.

I've got to be honest, I found this on Canva and simplified it for my purposes. When exploring the different museums I noticed a lot of paintings that might not be considered appropriate for my elementary students (any glimpse of nudity, even through a doorway would be out). I think it could be really amazing for them to see the Impressionists grouped together though. We talk about the movement in 5th grade and seeing several paintings as a group really helps them understand what the movement is about in a different way. I would lead a tour for them, which could be the Louvre or Musee d'orsay, showing them different paintings. I like the idea of them observing something closely enough to create a sketch of it, which is why I included it.

We do a lesson on generating ideas (brainstorming) which I always try to pull detail to help them figure out what to draw! We can then focus on learning about sketching and putting ideas into visual stories. This assignment was super helpful as I always just have them do this in their sketchbooks, but this makes it more tangible. I was also thinking I could have them brainstorm some details as well. I'll be using this next semester! Thank you for the inspiration!

I am in a self contained high school classroom with students with disabilities. We cover all subjects in class. In global studies we are in the unit of the renaissance period. So this is an image my students would be familiar with. I would break them up into 3 groups and each group would work together to put the Mona Lisa puzzle together. Below are questions for the puzzle analysis.

If you were able to meet the woman in the painting, what would you ask her?

How does this portrait compare to selfies or portraits we create today?

If you were to paint your own version of the Mona Lisa, what would you change or keep the same? Why?

Here is my simple handout to accompany a virtual museum tour. I will be using this next year with my Art History HS students. I recently visited the museum and immediately wanted to bring my students; so many connections can be made by seeing real life artifacts! This worksheet would be used an a starting point to help students self navigate then focus in on some Ah-ha moments, questions they may have and some memorable artifacts they enjoyed.

https://naturalhistory.si.edu/visit/virtual-tour/current-exhibits

I choose the Art Institute of Chicago to explore. I decided to do this lesson whole group with my smart board. This will give me more control of what my students view and also allow me to do this with a wider range of grade levels. I designed this in Canva and it will be very easy to swap the art in the frames as well as changing the name of the museums we visit.

I aplogize for how late this assigment is. 😔
