Person-centered planning is focused on collecting unique information about an individual grounded in their strengths, interests, and values. The goal is to build a connection between the individual, their uniqueness, and job opportunities. Person-centered planning can help Employment Specialists support clients by fostering positivity rather than obstacles or barriers to employment.

A person-centered employment plan can help an Employment Specialist (ES) by potentially letting the ES learn more about their client than they already know, or it could help lead to different avenues of interests/jobs that could work for the client. I heard somewhere else that it's good for the PCP facilitator to not know the client they are doing the plan on due to avoiding any biases that could be there. This can help lead to learning new things about the client that can help the ES in their search for a job that best fits the client. Doing a plan could help focus on skills and activities the client can and wants to do rather than on things they may not be able to do. I think it gives everyone, including the client, a fresh perspective.

It seems that there are many benefits of a facilitated person-centered employment. For many parties it creates a work- relationship (the employment specialist, support staff to the candidate). This work- relationship bond has many layers like an English Trifle. The many layers of this English Trifle can be seen as the following: getting to know the candidate: what makes them unique, what are their passions, who are their support system( parents to siblings) , at-home care staff, medical needs, what works or doesn’t work( can be seen as strengths and weaknesses) , to making accommodations so that candidate can be successful at work or in the community. The top layer of this Trifle should be seen as a goal making tool. How do you see them in 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, up to a year. Having information of the candidate that is detailed does make it easier for the Employment Specialist to help find them a job that their candidate would like.

Person Centered Employment Planning can help both the individuals and their providers because it gives the provider a more broad understanding of the individual. Person Centered Employment Planning allows the Employment Specialist to learn more about the individual (interests, likes, dislikes, and skill sets). This fosters a more understanding relationship between the individual and Employment Specialist because the ES has the ability to then customize the job search for the individual; they won't get a job that they don't really want because the ES has thorough knowledge of how to approach employment with the individual. I think this approach could also help build a more trusting relationship between the individual and the ES because the individual may feel more heard because they were able to voice their feelings and then have a plan customized for their wants and needs.

A person-centered employment plan has many benefits for the potential employer, the provider and the potential employee.

For the potential employer, a person-centered employment plan will make it much more likely that the employee will not only be qualified for the position, but also interested/passionate about the work. Employees may often take a job because of external forces, just needing a paycheck etc - with a person-centered employment plan, the likelihood that the potential employee will actually be interested and passionate about the work would likely lead to greater productivity and retention - a huge benefit for the employer.

The provider will gain important insight on the potential employee. This has the potential to speed up the process in the long run - while requiring work up front - freeing up resources in the future for more potential job seekers.

The main beneficiary of deliberate and consistent person-centered employment planning is, of course, the potential employee. By creating a space, with the proper accommodations, for frank and broad discussion will enable the entire team to learn more about the goals, skills and desires of the potential employee. All of this knowledge makes it much more likely that they will gain a job at a venue where they will find success.

There are many ways that a person-centered employment plan can help an employment specialist. The first way that comes to mind is the holistic picture of the person's interests, skills, and strengths that is able to be gleaned from this process due to having their whole team together including friends and family who know them well. It can also be so encouraging to have a group of people who all believe in the abilities of the person together brainstorming all of the wonderful jobs that this person could do. This encouragement and belief is key in the person having the confidence to go into a new job setting and succeed. All these people on the team are also this person's support system and so they would probably have wonderful insights into what kinds of supports would set the person up for success best in their new job. And by having all of this information up front as well as all the brainpower towards ideas of the best possible job settings for the person, the employer will benefit as well, because the person will be set up for success.

It's not about just finding any old job but it's about using that information I've gathered to possibly create opportunities that weren't even thought of. PCP also allows us to see what supports might be needed to assist the individual in reaching their goals. There are also benefits for the employer. By fitting a person to the job, the employee is more likely to be more productive and successful. PCP really allows for the individual to be heard and understood.

One of the main things I've taken away from the training around person centered planning is the importance of being able to think outside the box. It can be be easy for clients, family and support providers to default to past experiences and you risk ending up with a "content in a swimming pool by the ocean" situation. Creativity is key. As much as providers are able to open doors for their clients, each client can also introduce their staff to parts of the community they might not be connected with. Genuine curiosity in the interests and experiences of others is an important skill for employment specialists. I think it's important to remember that while we may be "employment experts", the individuals we serve (and their close friends and family) are the experts about their own lives. Let them steer the boat towards new waters.

A person-centered employment plan put the emphasis on the person, their unique skillset and characteristics. Since the focus is on the person, the job coach can better identify the individual’s strengths and job preferences therefore allowing them to customize an employment plan that will result in a better job match. This approach also centers on finding the right job based on an intensive, individualized discovery process as opposed to just finding a job that ignores the person meaning the job coach will be able to allocate their time to others that need help as opposed to continually finding employment for one person when the job does not work out because of a mismatch.

Person centered plans are a tool that employment specialists can incorporate to better understand the client they are serving. As the name suggests, a plan is created around the person, their interests, goals, support systems, experiences, strengths, and areas for future growth. These plans are a great way to involve friends, family, support staff, and the client and give them a means of "buying in". When individuals set goals for themselves they are more likely to put in the work required to achieve those goals. Facilitated person centered plans generate goals focused on ones career or employment status. These plans use the compiled information from the client and those closest to them to provide the employment specialist a great starting point for serving the client. These plans can be shared with potential employers and help them see our clients as more than just applicants. These plans can highlight out clients as individuals with a strong desire to work and an interest in the company for more than a paycheck. This can be very beneficial for both the employer as they filter through job seekers. In the end, a person center plan is something that employment specialists should utilize with most clients especially when the client is first entering services or re-entering the job market after a substantial period of time.

Attention is being paid to the person’s interests and skills. Their abilities are not being centered as limitations in the process but recognized as parts of their being that can transfer to a job and potentially identify where additional supports are needed to make their goals for employment come to life.

Homework #3-

A person centered employment plan can be incredibly useful and helpful in many ways. It gives the employment specialist the ability to learn more specifics of the client, and gives a deeper understanding of all the aspects within a clients life. The specialist will have the opportunity to learn about the clients interests, what kind of support system they have(if any), their strengths, weaknesses, their future goals, and much more. Based on the information received, it’ll help the specialist determine what route to take in selecting employment. The more in depth we go as specialists, the more we can discover an individual’s abilities, their limits, ambitions, but we’re able to discover if they don’t have a support system how can we build one to help this individual become successful. We will be able to organize and format a plan centered around their goals, and future needs to ensure that this individual will be able to find what they are looking for or wishing for. We want to create an opportunity for our clients to build a future and reach their goals and by having a person-centered employment plan, it’ll help us to help them.

For example, if someone really loves to paint and immediately placed in a indoor house painting service and this person has a hard time focusing on the job - one might assume that they don't like painting. However in a person centered employment plan - it is discovered that this person prefers to be outdoors because many types of indoor lighting affect their emotional and mental wellness - we can know that this person would be better suited for a painting position that occurs outside. The more context and information we have - the better match we can create for someone who is seeking a job and for a place that is desiring dependable employees.

It allows the Employment Specialist to understand the person in a much deeper way. As it is stated, the person is the center of the plan and everything is based around them. Knowing the person’s life experiences and history of likes and dislikes gives the specialist more tools/information to use. It also gives a much deeper, meaningful look at what strategies are in place for support or what might be missing. The more information about skill sets and interests can only add benefit for the Employment Specialist when seeking work opportunities.

This helps to have a full understanding of their client. Having others talk about the person can give you a full picture of what the person has done in the past which can give you more idea on what skills they have and where these skills can be applied in a career aspect. There are many things the Employment Specialist does not know about the client that family, friends, and other supports will be able to give them answers to. The more information they have will help map out what transferable skill the client has and will also help with what the client enjoys doing. This will give them more of an understanding of what a good job fit could be.

A person-centered employment plan can help an Employment Specialist make effective and relevant focus in an effort to help a member achieve gainful employment. The information provided through the person-centered plan can greatly help in the planning process for employment based on the members specific interests and strong suits. The ultimate goal is to consider the member's likes, dislikes, strengths, passions and dreams. Considering all this information the Employment Specialist can work to find job opportunities that will enhance the members interests and encourage them towards whatever their passions or ultimate career goals may be. I think the person-centered plan can provide the intricate details about a person and their employment goals to catapult them into job opportunities that showcase their positive attributes and areas of progressive development that the individual may be working towards. All these factors carry valuable weigh in and lay the ground work for an Employment Specialist to spearhead a successful pursuit of gainful employment planning.

a facilitated person-centered employments plan is supposed to help the employment specialist to better understand their client. This plan will help the ES gain perspective of the client in ways they would have not known because they do not interact with the client in those settings. They will hear from other people in the clients life and how they see them interact with the world around them. This should help the ES identify skills and interests that will help them to find and maintain gainful employment in doing something that they not only are good at doing but also something that they enjoy doing.

A PCEP can provide Employment Specialists with necessary information about an individual, including their strengths, interests, supports, and needs. Before an Employment Specialist can find someone a job, they need to determine what would be a good fit for them and why. Without this information, job development and placement would be random and would have a lower success rate. These plans also help an Employment Specialist narrow their focus so they know what they are specifically looking for that will meet the specific needs of the individual.

A Person Centered Employment Plan is able to provide an Employment Specialist with information and insight to the individual beyond just whether or not they are good at their job. Understanding how to help the individual ensure that their job is the right fit for them and how to help them reach success are both things that a PCEP can do. Understanding the individual on a deeper level allows for the ES to be able to help the individual reach satisfaction in the workplace and find the right fit, rather than being tossed into a job that they have little to no interest in.
