TIP #1 Find Mentors

I want to create a program for first generation students to help prepare them for higher education. To start off on a good foot, I first need to find a mentor who works with an organization that engages with local communities. A good organization and mentor to seek would be one that works with immigrant families. With a mentor in this field, I can gain insight on what resources are provided to them (or lack thereof), this can help me better understand the needs of first generation students in order to obtain a higher education

When it comes to this career choice of wanting to create a program for first generation students, I need to bring out the best in myself. When it comes to working with communities and trying to solves issues, one of the best characteristics and talents a person can have is being a good listener. This is a talent I am proud to have, when it comes to talking to people, it is important that people are aware that you are taking in what they are saying and not letting what they say go in through one ear and out the other. Once a person has finished talking, I always bring back issues they brought and and ask them more about it. When this is done, people feel appreciated and recognized.

Every career can be stressful and overwhelming, when it comes to working with students and communities, the pressure can get to people. The pressure of trying to better a community and a person's life can be a heavy burden, something that can bring negative feelings when something does not go as planned. When going through this journey, it is important to remind myself to recognize my accomplishments and not let failures or obstacles consume me. Acknowledging the positive outcomes that I have created in the past and not allowing the pressure to consume, will help my day-to-day process.

I want to create a program for first generation students who are looking to achieve a higher education after completing high school. One thing that many first generation students struggle with is finding someone who can help with their journey, I want to be the person who can create a program that provides resources such as scholarship information/opportunities, career paths, college information, and more. I want to create an easier path to college, not one that is full of stress and anxiety for students who have no knowledge of what to expect. As a first generation student and American, I understand the struggles that comes with figuring out what college may be like and what is required, especially when i had no one who could help me, it was something i had to figure out on my own. Education is important and it should not be a difficult path to follow.

In order to create my own program, it is important that I network. Networking can lead to many different opportunities and connections. When trying to create a program that is attempting to provide resources, it is important to find people or an organization that is willing to help with funding. In order to even get my plans started, I need to be able to fund my program and networking is the best option.

It is always important to invest time to figure out how to accomplish a goal. When it comes to creating a program for first generation students, it is important to plan out how the program will be implemented, who can benefit the most from the program, and what steps I need to take in order to get this idea off the ground and running.

TIP #7 Make A Change

As I have stated before, I am first generation student and when it came to applying to college and figuring out what to do, it was a difficult situation to be. Especially going to high school that is primary Latino and African American, we did not have the same resources that were provided to predominantly white schools. This reality continues to limit resources for higher education and leaves so many students in a situation where they ultimately choose not to go to college because the experience was too complex. I want to change that and allow everyone, especially first gen students, to have a better understanding of college and be prepared for what may come.

losing passion or interest is always something that can occur with time, so in order to push through that, I need to remind myself of the bigger picture. this passion of mine comes from personal experience, an experience of frustration and confusion, and it is not an experience that is unique to just me. I have spoken to many first generation students who have felt and continue to feel that frustration with their journey in higher education. The passion of this issue will overcome the any temptation of using interest, as it a cause that can have a positive effects on many people.

One of the most important things to remember during this journey, is it to enjoy the process. I would love to be work on this program with a close friend who is also in the education field. Working with people who have the same passion and background can be motivating and fun. It can be helpful to have someone there to always support one another and make the journey less bumpy and more adventurous.
