Water is an increasingly scarce resource and many populations in the world still remain without access to a source of drinking water. Institutions such as Unicef and the World Health Organization (WHO) have access to drinking water as one of their priority objectives, as there is a direct link between access to safe drinking water and health.

The WHO specifies that there is access to potable water when the source of the water is less than 1 kilometer away from the place of use and that it is possible to reliably obtain at least 20 liters per day for each member of the family

Diarrhea diseases are the second leading cause of death among children under five years of age, resulting in the deaths of 760 billion children each year. Diarrhea can last for several days and can deprive the body of the water and salts necessary for survival. Most people who die from diarrheal diseases actually die from severe dehydration and fluid loss. Malnourished or immunocompromised children are at greatest risk for potentially fatal diarrheal diseases.
