Signs in animals include weakness, stumbling, trembling, head tremors, inability to fly/walk, and a lack of awareness that allows them to be approached or handled. Infected horses may develop encephalitis and have lethargy, weakness, incoordination, paralysis, or even death. Animals have a worse time with the disease than humans do. Death can be a risk for humans as well, but animals literally stand no chance. Animals vs. WNV is a losing battle.

The picture above pretty much explains the prevention of getting the West Nile Virus. As it says avoid wearing strong fragrances. Also make sure all doors and windows stay shut, a mosquito can come in just as quick as a fly can. The suggestion of standing water is known to be true, because mosquitoes love water. One last thing that's major help is wearing mosquito repellent.

Another way is observe your animal everyday. I'm very much sure that they probably have mosquito repellent for animals too.
