BN"Y was complaining that they didn’t have any food. They said that they would rather just go back to being enslaved in Mitzryim. How ridiculous! Because of this Hashem said he will send down Maan and they will collect it everyday. However, Hashem won’t give it to BN”Y on Shabbos so they will collect double the amount on Friday. They ate the Maan for 40 years until they got to the border of Israel. BN"Y complained that they didn’t have any food now and they wish they were still in Egypt and Hashem responded  that he will bring down the Maan for them to eat. This stop taught Bnei Yisrael that in order to survive in the Midbar they need to keep their faith in Hashem. There is a Rashbam on this stop that helps explain this stop to us. The Rashbam said that we had to rely on Hashem so much in the Midbar because he was supplying our everyday food.  But he quotes a different passuk saying that Hashem waited a day before giving them food to see how their loyalty at the time was. Hashem needed to wait to give us the Maan to see if our faith was really in Hashem, or if we would give up our faith after Hashem waited a day to give it to us. Hashem wanted to see if our faith was really with him or not.

Then Hashem said to Moshe, "Pass before the people; take with you some of the elders of Israel, and take along the staff with the same staff that he hit the water at the Nile, and set out." Then Hashem said that I will be standing there before you on the rock at Horeb. Hit/Strike the rock and water will come out from it, and the people will drink. And Moshe did exactly what Hashem told him to do and the elders of Israel were there to witness it. BN”Y complained that after Hashem took them out of Egypt, while they were going from the Midbar/Marah to Rephidim like Hashem told them to, they didn’t have any drinkable water, so they were mad at Moshe and Hashem because of this. Hashem responded to this by telling Moshe to take the elders of Israel as witnesses, and to go and hit the rock, and water will come out of it so that they will have drinkable water. This stop shows that Hashem is and will always be there for BN”Y. It was also test BN”Y to see if they would always have faith in Hashem even when it Seems like he isn’t always there it shows BN”Y that he is always there and BN"Y/we should always have faith in him even when it doesn’t seem like he is there. There is a Rashi on this stop that helps explain this stop to us. Rashi asks why did Moshe have to take elders of Israel with him? Rashi said that he had to take the elders of Israel so that they could witness Moshe hitting the rock and getting water out of it. “that they may see that it is by your agency that the water will come forth from the rock and that people may not say that there had been springs there from time immemorial.” So that they would see the miracles that Hashem actually does, and not just hear it from Moshe like they usually do.

Moshe said to Yehoshua to choose men to fight for us against Amalek in the war and I will go on top of the hill with the staff in my hand. Then Yehoshua did exactly what Moshe told him to do and he went to war with Amalek, and Moshe, Ahron and Chur stood on top of the hill. Only when Moshe put his hand up was when they started to win the war, but when he didn’t they were losing. And Moshe's hands were heavy; they took a stone and placed it under him, and he sat on it, and Aharon and Chur supported his hands, one on this side and one on that side; and he was with his hands [spread in] faithful prayer until the sunset. And Yehoshua weakened Amalek and BN”Y won the war. Hashem said to Moshe, Write this for a remembrance in the Book and recite it in the ears of Yehoshua, because I will surely wipe out the remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens. Here, BN”Y didn’t necessarily complain to Hashem, but Hashem responded to Amalek going to battle with BN”Y by showing that he is with Moshe, and he showed that whenever Moshe put his arms up, BN”Y succeeded. The purpose of this stop was to show BN”Y that Hashem is always with them even in war, and if they trust him, and do what Moshe/Hashem do, Hashem will help them succeed. Ray Moshe Lichtenstein comments on this stop and helps us understand why Amalek went to war against BN"Y. He  says that Amalek didn’t go to battle with BN”Y to make themselves known or to idolize their god. They did it with the soul thought that they wanted to be bad people. They have a desire to harm other people in order so that they can be greater themselves. By putting other people down, they gained. They didn’t fight to make their nation larger, but they did it simply to kill and be cruel to others.
