College recruitment, something most athletes dream of but little get to experience. Being good at your sport can come with many good perks such as; attention, "money", and going to college. For me the college recruitment process went quite well and I think i made a good choice, however, i did not rely on a recruiter to get into college, yes it made the process easier but if i did't get recruited i probably would still be in college. For many people this is not the case, some athletes have really really bad grades and depend on sports for a spot. In lower income communities "students" often rely on sports.

Basketball or football can be great examples of "escapes" for less privileged people. Because there sports bring in a LOT of money for colleges often times admissions offices in certain institutions will ignore bad grades and let athletes in.

In Friday night lights we can see how football was an escape for the town, everyone is in a "bad position" and they use football to forget their problems. Athletes on the field are all playing their hardes and are working insanely hard for a spot on a college team, they know if they don't make it that way, they got no other way.

For most athletes being recruited to college is a dream that they will never see come to flurision. They work hard for years, make massive sacrifices and... nothing. In Hoop dreams we see two athletes that are truly amazing at what they do, they will end up as professionals but still fought really hard for a spot on a college team. Most of their teammates put in somewhat similar amounts of work and got nowhere.

The NCAA recruiting rules make it hard for an athlete to know what they are getting themselves into, a lot of the time athletes will be able to get a little money to pay for college but they still pay. "The house always wins"

As a student athlete who has been recruited by a college i have a lot of say about everything i wrote earlier. First off parents don't know what they are doing. It took my mom years to learn how to do the best by an athlete, she always wanted me to succeed but when i started to compete in america it seemed to be more her (or my dad) getting the most out of my athletic career. Soon enough however the changed, evolved, and understood to back down a little bit. Still, my mom used to be a national level tennis star when she was younger and had to stop due to injury, for that she was overprotective for the longest time, everytime i would have a bad meet, she would get mad at me. At the time she "[could] not understand how i [couldn't] push myself more, be a tiger". At the time this made me want to quit swimming all together, i didn't want to disappoint my mom by performing badly so why not just not perform. I kept with it and after a little while, she changed her ways, good times :).

When it comes to college recruitment i cannot relate much to people who rely on it to escape their current situation. I have it perfectly good here and college is not much of a stretch to think about. Swimming helped me get into a better school than i would have otherwise but i know enough student athletes to at least hear what i'm getting myself into.

When it comes to athlete exploitation, there is not much i can relate to here. I see some kids on my team's parents use their kids to feel good about themselves (having raised a strong athlete) but swimming is not a "big bucks" sport. Because swimming doesn't bring home a lot of money the athletes in this realm are not used as puppets nearly as much or badly than in other sports. It is still annoying that we cannot have made any money from our athletic career to be admissible to the MIAA.

Athletes are often exploited for monetary gain by schools, colleges and brands. At a professional level athletes are compensated, they make money and its a real job. The same cannot be said at an academic level, for student athletes. Student athletes are not allowed to make money from their sport, in NCAA contracts when students are getting recruited there is a line in there that says they haven't made more than x amount of money playing the sport (usually 1000$ or less).

In friday night lights, on more than one occurence when an athlete is unable to play for the high school team anymore, they are forgotten. No one cares about their person, only what they brought to the town. In the book we see how the only thing the town cares about is football, it brings in money and people. The athletes get none of it tho, all they have is fake grades and a dream that maybe they can go to college it they play well enough.

Basketball seems to have the spotlight when it comes to athlete exploitation, athletes from lower income communities are brought to college and treated like slaves, working for the NCAA and never touching any money that they would have brought to the company. Hoop dreams seemed to exemplify this, a story where people use recruitment to get out of their present situation only to be in a similar one later on.
Athletes are promised an education but often don't get one. They are given so many "freebies" from academic requirements that all they are really there to do, is play.

Parents want their kids to succeed, we all know that. But what do they do to help them? Well, in sports parents take many approaches. Very commonly they find themselves bringing their athlete down despite having good intentions.

Athletes need to live their own lives, have fun with what they are doing and to be dedicated to their craft to be successful.
The golden rule is to have fun, if you don't enjoy what you do, you go nowhere.

Most parents think that if they push their kid just a little more, to do a just a little more than what they do now, their kid will do better. This can work, most of the time however that motivation can't come from an adult, but from the kids themselves. In Hoop dreams the star athletes motivate themselves, at least after a little while. The kids can learn what they need to do but it's up to them to do it.

Sports Psychology made a list of Do's and Don'ts for parents of athletes, their first don't; don't live through your kids success. The first Do; let your kid choose and be interested in what they want, and give them the opportunity to figure things out themselves. Another important point that most parents don't understand is that we need to make mistakes to learn. When athletes are shielded from any failure (participation trophies) they don't grow, nothing evolves. Expecting perfection from a parent is also one of the most detrimental things for athletes, nothing will ever be "perfect" and with that, your kid will never be good enough, despite the hardest efforts. Expecting perfection is a massive factor in kids burning out and losing confidence.

In FNL parents force their kids to compete for the football team and to play through whatever, whenever. The kids try to do what is expected of them but always end up getting hurt. This doesn't happen only in books, its true. Just go to any basketball game or high school competition, look around, there is always at least one mom/dad that goes way to far and pushes their child way to much, Its not hard to see.
