Learners Level of Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

Prior Knowledge: This will be the first time that pupils have engaged with Athletics at second level PE, even though they have been in the school for one and a half years. In first year, the pupils did complete a 6 week scheme in Orienteering and also a 6 week scheme on invasion games and foundation activities. Through these the pupils will have encountered running, catching, throwing and whole range of FMS. From this the pupils have been able to gain an appreciation of the sport of Athletics. Furthermore, a number of pupils are on the athletics team in school, while there are 15 other pupils who play team sports such as soccer & GAA and they will have encountered different types of athletics in training, specifically running and jumping. Simply put the knowledge of the pupils is varied and this will need to be considered when I am creating the lesson plans.

Prior Skills: Pupils have displayed at the very least a basic level in the fundamental movement skills of balancing, running, turning and jumping, which will serve the pupils well in this scheme.

Prior Attitudes: Overall, this class are well behaved and are motivated to take part for the majority of the time. This class are generally an enthusiastic class; however, they tend to get carried away during pair and group challenges, which has resulted in minor behavioural issues needing to be addressed. The challenge for me in this module will be to implement a guided discovery approach to learning in which the pupils can actively contribute to their own learning. However, I cannot, with this group just act as a facilitator as their will be a need to operate a didactic approach with regards to instruction on occasion, as this class in my experience do not possess the maturity to work off their own initiative-just yet.

The 'TPSR' model believes that in teaching physical education we can teach life skills as well. Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility is about using physical education as a means to teach a code or a discipline to students (Hellison, 2011). Although the pupils in this class are not very disruptive, I believe that getting them to take responsibility for their own behaviour and learning will benefit them in later life. By teaching and learning physical education through this model, they can start to; (a) Think about their attitudes, values, and behaviour; (b) Think about the effect their attitudes, values, and behaviour have on others/their classmates; (c) Try to become more personally and socially responsible in physical education and outside of the PE hall. I plan to facilitate this model and unit with many task cards, in which students will work both individually and as part of groups to help them develop and grow as a person. Students will also learn to grade themselves on the ‘Totum Poll’ where students identify the level they are at (See totum poll attached). This is very individual to each student as they will learn to assess their own learning. This is also applicable to the ‘Individual and team challenges’ strand, as athletics involves many individual activities where students can learn and develop independently. This model also focuses highly on the student-teacher relationship which I am continually trying to build on. Although it may be difficult at the beginning, where both teacher and student are vulnerable emotionally”, many positive benefits can arise from it (Metzler, 2005).

Athletics is a fundamental base for almost every sport, thus as well as being a major competitive sector in worldwide sporting events, it is a sport based on the primary motor movements of the human being. It allows the students to experience and develop the lifelong skill of personal goal setting as well as offering them the opportunity to develop their social skills and confidence whilst recognising their physical abilities. Athletics “provides the students with the opportunity to develop personally, socially and physically through participation in a variety of athletic activities in a safe and enjoyable environment” (JCPE, Guidelines for Teachers, P.142). The subsequent JCPE area of study according to the National Council of Curriculum Association (2003) can provide students with the skills of running, jumping and throwing which can be transferred and applied across other areas of the JCPE curriculum and other sports. Similarly, it can provide students with an appreciation and value for athletics and the associated rules governing such events. Equally, it presents students with the perspective to experience competitive situations in the context of setting personal goals and comparing prior performance to previous personal attempts rather than relating solely performance to that of others. Finally, it ensures that students experience opportunities to develop socially through participation in group activities.

This second-year group are at the stage where they need to be given an opportunity to develop socially & personally and so Athletics is the ideal choice. Moreover, I feel this activity will encourage the students to embrace the different roles they will be learning about. It is also a sport with a lot of skills and techniques to be mastered which will help greatly in introducing the role of the coach. Students will get an insight into what it takes to be an effective coach and perhaps this will open up an area of interest for some of them, who do not possess or particularly engage with the area of active participation in a competitive fashion. Athletics also offers the unique combination of both track and field events, as well as individual and team events and so offers the ideal opportunity for pupils who do not participate in sports to find an activity in which they may find enjoyable, which can result in participation in physical activity outside of the school environment

The learning experience for the pupils here will be based around the three learning domains of; cognitive, psychomotor and affective, so as to adopt a holistic approach where possible. Each week the students will learn a new skill, in a fun and enjoyable manner. The normal class structure will apply, with a warm up, cool down and central aspects of each lesson. Each week the students will be given a choice of some sort, for example if they would like to progress onto a harder task or remain practising. Moreover, as recommended stretching and mobility exercises must form a central part of each lesson. Furthermore, within every athletics lesson the teacher should endeavour to have a balance between a variety of physical activities and necessary teacher instruction / student discussion (JCPE Guidelines for teachers, P.140). The technical aspect of specific events should not dominate the lesson at the expense of student participation, as this in my opinion would prove detrimental to the student learning experience as pupils need to be active participants in their own learning as much as possible. To complement the TPSR model, students will be provided with opportunities for participation in running, jumping and throwing activities in a variety of contexts. These will include task cards, pair work (coach and player roles), individual work, problem solving, and the use of ICT and
