Radio 1 was broadcast at 6.55am on Saturday, 30th September 1967 (alongside Radio 2). The station was launched to meet demands of the public, who had been tuning in to offshore pirate stations such as Radio Caroline and Radio London, which were outlawed by an act of Parliament as they were infiltrating military air signals. The first R1 host, Tony Blackburn, was stolen by the BBC from Radio Caroline, in the hopes that he would bring his listeners with him.
