Decorating a ship at Christmas is a traditional Greek custom associated with the nautical tradition, symbolizing the return of sailors, the anticipation of children and the love of the sea, with the boats being decorated with colored paper, ropes, lights and filled with sweets, while today it is being revived on islands and squares, despite the prevalence of the Christmas tree.

Symbolism

Anticipation & Return: It symbolized the return of sailors and expatriates, with the stern looking inward, as well as the anticipation of children for the return of their parents.

Honor & Welcome: It was a welcome to seafarers and a vow for safety on journeys.

New Voyage: Modernly interpreted as a symbol of a new beginning and a better path in life.

How it was done (Tradition)

Decoration: Children made wooden boats themselves, decorated them with colored paper, ropes and lights.

Carols: The jesters held them and put sweets, Christmas bread and kourabiedes inside.

Placement: Decorated boats were placed next to the door or fireplace.

Today

Revival: Despite the prevalence of the tree, the custom is maintained on islands, squares and even in houses, with an attempt to restore it.

Modern Decoration: Lights, charms, and other decorations are used, giving a distinct Greek touch to Christmas.
