Rome controlled much of the western world from 27 BC to 476 AD. At the height of its rule, the empire stretched from Britan in the west to Mesopotamia in the east. Much of Rome’s control was gained by their quick action in putting down uprisings and forcing conquered peoples to become Roman citizens. In addition, the strength of their army allowed them to both maintain control and demonstrate the empire’s power and ability to bring peace. Furthermore, the organisation of government officials and rulers ensured stability through the succession of emperors. Conquering regions both increased wealth and provided a way of sourcing slaves. Latin was used in all government interactions and by many of the wealthy upper class, however, most people continued to speak local languages such as Celtic, Coptic and Aramaic. Greek was also used, known as the language of scholars. Many cultural and ethnic groups were also ruled by Rome, such as Egyptians, Jews, Syrians, Africans, Greeks, Celts, Germans. The transportation of goods and people was made possible through solid structures such as roads, bridges, and ships. Ships were often used to transport more goods in shorter amounts of time than could be moved overland. These travelled through land ruled by Romans such as England/Wales (then known as Britannia), Spain (Hispania), France (Gaul or Gallia), Greece (Achaea), the Middle East (Judea) and the North African coastal region.

Saul, a Roman Jew and fierce critic and persecutor of Christians, experienced the most radical transformation through Christ in all areas of his life Born a member of the tribe of Benjamin, in Tarsus (In Syria) to a relatively wealthy family, and was well educated, learning Greek, Latin, and Hebrew. Saul identified as a Pharisee and became involved in ruthlessly persecuting Christians. However, at the approximate age of 30, sometime between 34 and 37CE, Saul had an overwhelming experience, a vision of the resurrected Christ on the road to Damascus, transforming his whole life. This personal call by the risen Lord to Saul made his relationship with Jesus the absolute center of his life. He was then known throughout the scriptures as ‘Paul’. Jesus was his Lord and Savior, the one he was proud to serve, the one whose sufferings he was prepared to share because of his passionate conviction of the reality of his friendship with Jesus. Subsequently, Paul’s motive was to spread the word of Jesus, travelling through Galatia, Athens, Antioch and to create Christian churches and communities such as Rome, Thessalonica, Galatia, Corinth and Colossae. This was the first of his four journey’s, on which he travelled with his mentee Timothy to continue Christ’s mission here on earth.

As a result of his personal conversion, Paul was empowered by God to spread the gospel. Paul travelled across the world, accompanied by many protégé’s such as Barnabas, Silas and Timothy. Paul’s missionary journeys were recorded in the New Testament of the Bible in the Acts of the Apostles. His second journey, the longest and some say most influential, began in about 49-52 A.D. For about a year or two, Paul and Silas, remained in Athens and Corinth, two major centers of Greek culture and learning. Paul preached to everyone, in places like synagogues to speak to the Jews. He often spoke in the marketplaces to common, everyday people, and to the learned in lecture halls. From here he continued to travel on to locations such as Ephesus, modern day Western Turkey, Caesarea, and Jerusalem, which have continued to be called their original name, Antioch, modern day Northern turkey and finally Philippi, nowadays called Fílippoi, where he made his way back to Treasa to begin his third journey. His message while preaching to all these communities, as discerned in his letters and books, never failed to be centered on Jesus loving sacrifice for all.

Post 4 - The purpose of Paul's letters

To ensure the early Christian communities would continue to grow, Paul maintained contact by writing letters, reminding them of the great gift they had been given in Jesus Christ and of the new life they must lead. His letters can be summarised in three main messages; The message of righteousness and salvation, the importance of equality in the Christian community, and the importance of the cross and Jesus sacrificial death and resurrection. Firstly, the message of righteousness and salvation, promotes the idea that we are made right with God not by observing the law but through faith in Jesus Christ. Paul believed that the law only makes us more conscious of our sin, however it cannot save us from what our sin has earned us; death. This is evident in 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. The second message is emphasised in Paul’s letters to the Romans 6:22-23. Paul explains that like parts of the body, each person in God’s sacred community has a different gift to give. According to Paul, God’s vision is to have a united community living harmoniously as one family. The third message in Paul’s letters is the importance of the cross and Christ’s death and resurrection. For Paul, the greatest symbol of God’s love for us was the cross of Jesus. Christ humbled himself to be crucified on our behalf. Hence, through this sacrifice we are reconciled, and humbled as Jesus was. This is outlined in 1 Corinthians 14:12-14. Almost two thousand years later, Saint Paul's letters continue to guide the church and inspire believers.

As demonstrated both in the Acts of the Apostles and Saint Paul’s missionary letters, many messages and themes of Jesus mission contradicted with those of the Jews, who valued their culture, law and tradition above all else. One particular focus of Paul’s teachings that contradicted with the Jewish leaders was his acceptance of the Gentiles into Christian communities. In many of his letters, such as in the book of Galatians, the issue is explored and debated. Paul was strongly resistant to placing burdens of Jewish law on the Gentiles who became Christian, for example circumcision and only eating specified foods. The Jews opinion contradicted this, wishing to uphold the sacred Abrahamic covenant given to them by God in the Old Testament. “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.” (Gal 5:6), Paul testifies against the Jewish leaders, implying that nobody is worthy of God’s grace. However, God was willing to sacrifice his only son, so both Jews and Gentiles could be welcomed into God’s kingdom, no matter what rules they have followed. He further urges the Jews to listen to this commandment by referencing the sacred books of the Old Testament in Galatians 5:22 – 6:2; “You shall love your neighbors as yourself”; “Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ”.

As Christians, we believe that we are saved solely through faith. However, we often act as though God accepts and loves us depending on our behaviour. In Galatians, we can listen to Paul’s teachings about the great joys and freedom that come from living under Christ's grace. Two small excerpts from Galatians 3:1-14 read, “Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because “the righteous will live by faith.”[f14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.” In Paul’s life, God forgave him for all his past wrong doings as a persecutor of Christians. This is applicable to our lives because he clearly suggests that, as young teens, we can be reassured that no matter how many mistakes we have made or will make, or how distracted from the love of God we have been, God is always willing to save us. This can be further applied to our lives as Paul says, “21 Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law,” reinforcing the idea that our ability to keep the law does not define our image in God’s eyes. God willingly provided a way for us to be reconciled to him through Jesus’ sacrifice, allowing us to dwell with God in heaven eternally.
